Rare Genetic Trait: Mother Astonished by Newborn Baby’s Strand of White Hair

A 33-year-old media content producer named Elma Godwin from Dallas, Texas, was overwhelmed with joy and disbelief when she first laid eyes on her newborn daughter, Annie, on September 13. Annie was born with a rare white streak in her hair that matched her mother’s own streak since birth.

This unique feature is a sign of their shared genetic condition known as piebaldism. The genetic marker immediately caught the attention of everyone in the delivery room, from nurses to doctors.

Piebaldism is a rare genetic condition that affects the production of melanin, causing patches of unpigmented skin and hair.

For Godwin, this condition meant she has a distinctive white streak running from her hairline all the way through her dark hair. While this mark has become a defining part of her identity, she always believed she would be the only one in the family to have it.

Her eldest daughter, Ali, who is now 2 years old, did not have the condition at birth. So, when Annie arrived with the matching white streak, it was a huge surprise for Godwin and her 35-year-old husband, Misan Ludart, who runs an interior design company.

“When they put her on my chest, I was the first to see it,” Godwin said. “I couldn’t believe it – her hair was identical to mine, in the exact same spot.”

Throughout her upbringing, Godwin felt like she was the only person in the world with this condition. It wasn’t until she was 24 that she discovered others with piebaldism through social media.

“Knowing I wasn’t alone was really comforting,” she said.

Connecting with others with a similar condition helped her come to terms with her own. Today, she is an advocate for embracing differences, especially for young women with piebaldism.

Godwin now uses her platform to encourage young women to embrace their unique traits.

“Seeing others with the same condition on social media helped me accept it, and it inspires young girls too. I always tell them it’s something to be proud of,” she said.

Ludart was equally moved by the arrival of their daughter and her shared trait with her mother.

“My wife noticed baby Annie’s hair, while I was still overjoyed cutting the umbilical cord! I am so grateful for a safe delivery, and seeing her hair was an incredible added bonus,” he said.
