Photo Story: Extreme Heatwave Sweeps Across Multiple Areas in India, 16 People Die from Heatstroke

Recently, a severe heatwave has hit large parts of India, with temperatures in multiple cities consistently above 45 degrees Celsius. In the southern state of Telangana, at least 16 people have died from heatstroke, prompting local authorities to urge the public to be vigilant and take practical steps to prevent health risks caused by the high temperatures.

According to reports from Agence France-Presse, Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy, the Minister of Taxation in Telangana, issued a statement from his office on Sunday, May 24th, stating that the intensity of this heatwave has reached unprecedented levels and calling on local officials to issue early warnings to prevent heat-related issues. The local government has advised high-risk groups such as the elderly, children, and pregnant women to avoid going outside during the day unless absolutely necessary.

Health experts have warned that extreme heat can lead to severe dehydration in the body, thickening of the blood, and in severe cases, organ failure.

The Indian Meteorological Department predicted last week that several regions across the country would experience temperatures above normal levels and intense heatwave conditions. In the capital, New Delhi, and surrounding cities, temperatures have remained above 40 degrees Celsius, causing unbearable heat during the day and high nighttime temperatures, leading to a historic surge in electricity consumption.

Official data shows that the highest recorded temperature in India was 51 degrees Celsius, measured in Phalodi, Rajasthan in the northwest in 2016.

The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and urging the public to take necessary precautions to stay safe during this extreme heatwave. Stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and seek medical help if experiencing symptoms of heat-related illnesses.
