Shenzhen issues red alert for heavy rain, city-wide school closures, airport flights delayed.

Guangdong Province has been experiencing heavy rainfall for several consecutive days. On June 18th, the Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory issued the highest-level red rainstorm warning for multiple districts, putting the entire city on high alert for rainstorms. As a result, primary and secondary schools, as well as kindergartens, were closed for the day. In addition, Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport initiated a large-scale yellow warning for flight delays.

At noon on June 18th, the Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory issued red rainstorm warnings for multiple districts, including Luohu, Futian, Longgang, Longhua, where the accumulated rainfall reached levels of heavy rain. Shenzhen entered a state of emergency defense against rainstorms, with authorities reminding the public to take precautions swiftly, to stay away from low-lying flood-prone areas, and to be mindful of potential disasters such as flash floods, mountain torrents, landslides, mudslides, and ground collapses caused by the rainstorm.

During the red rainstorm warning period, all primary and secondary schools, kindergartens, and childcare institutions in Shenzhen were closed for the day.

According to China Civil Aviation Network, the heavy rainfall has affected flight operations at Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport, prompting the activation of a large-scale yellow warning for flight delays. As of 11 a.m. on the 18th, more than 20 outbound flights were delayed for over 1 hour. Airlines will adjust other flights on the same day based on weather conditions and subsequent operation status.

On that day, the topic “Rain in Shenzhen looks like smoke” trended on Weibo.

Local netizens posted describing the scene as “a vast expanse of white. I thought the clouds were falling. In the past two days, the rain in Shenzhen is so heavy that the roads seem to be ‘smoking’ with rain curtains so dense that even the street views are blurred. Just the rain today, even two red rainstorm warnings are not excessive! It’s so hazy due to the rain that you can’t see clearly! Friends have been able to catch fish on the road from the rain… driving feels like sailing a boat. Just in time for the Dragon Boat Festival tomorrow, we can paddle right at our doorstep.”

“The rain in Shenzhen doesn’t care about the time of day. There was a severe rainstorm during the morning rush hour, another heavy rainstorm during lunchtime, a brief pause in the afternoon, and now a super heavy rainstorm during the evening rush hour and dinner time. Delivery drivers are having a tough time.”
