This August’s upcoming meteor shower is expected to be the most popular of the year, reaching its peak on a moonless night. The Perseids meteor shower, occurring annually in the latter half of the northern hemisphere summer, provides a spectacular astronomical event. From mid-July to late August, as Earth passes through the dust cloud left by the Swift–Tuttle comet, spectators can observe fireballs streaking across the sky at a speed of 37 miles per second.
According to NASA, the Perseids meteor shower peaks in mid-August and is considered the best meteor shower of the year. The meteors from the Perseids shower are fast-moving and bright, often leaving long trails and colorful displays as they traverse the Earth’s atmosphere.
Named after the constellation Perseus, the meteor shower is set to rise just past 8:30 am on August 12 in Eastern Daylight Time and descend around 1:20 am on August 13. The observation window spans from July 17 to August 24, with the peak expected on August 12-13. One key reason for the shower’s popularity is its occurrence on warm summer nights, providing a comfortable viewing environment for stargazers.
The American Meteor Society (AMS) notes that the shower’s occurrence frequency in rural areas is considered “normal,” with an average of 30 to 50 meteors per hour. However, during the peak on August 12-13, the Perseids meteor shower is expected to produce up to 100 meteors per hour.
This remarkable celestial event coincides with a new moon, a crucial point on the lunar calendar when Earth’s shadow completely obscures the moon near the ground, creating an ideal setting for observation. With darker skies, smaller light sources become easier to discern, and many regions in the United States are unaffected by light pollution, providing optimal viewing conditions.
National parks across the country, including 18 designated Dark Sky Parks by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA), offer ideal spots for stargazing. These locations are away from urban light pollution, boasting dark, clear skies perfect for viewing thousands of stars visible in the Milky Way and even faint celestial objects without the need for telescopes.
While traditionally meteor showers are best observed late into the night or before dawn, it may be challenging for many visitors to stay up or wake up at such late hours. The National Park Service (NPS) recommends starting observation after dusk for the most comfortable and effective viewing—lying down on the ground to take in the entire sky.
Among the state parks certified by the IDA on the East Coast are Cherry Springs State Park in Pennsylvania, James River State Park in Virginia, Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park in Florida, Mayland Earth to Sky Park & Bare Dark Sky Observatory in North Carolina, Natural Bridge State Park in Virginia, Staunton River State Park in Virginia, Sky Meadows State Park in Virginia, and Watoga State Park in West Virginia.
While Western parks are generally known for darker night skies ideal for meteor shower and star viewing, the viewing experience remains weather-dependent. Visitors planning stargazing trips should monitor local weather forecasts to ensure clear skies free of storm clouds or wildfire smoke.
Access to overnight camping and 24-hour road access in many national and state parks facilitates nighttime observation for visitors across the country, offering opportunities to witness the beauty of the Perseids meteor shower in diverse natural settings.
