Spraying on the windowsill can prevent dead flies from appearing.

You may see some dead flies on the windowsill, which is not only unhygienic but also affects the aesthetics. Perhaps you will lament that these pests, while alive, fly around and disturb people, even spreading diseases, and it’s bothersome even after they die. So, is there a way to prevent flies from dying on the windowsill?

According to a report by the British tabloid “Daily Express”, indoor flies are attracted by the light outside the window but often cannot penetrate the glass. This leads to them being trapped and exhausting themselves in their attempts to escape.

Once they cannot access food or water, they quickly dehydrate and die from overheating in the intense sunlight, ending up as carcasses on the windowsill.

If you feel disgusted by these fly corpses, there is a simple trick to help you drive them away and prevent them from dying on the windowsill.

The method involves spraying peppermint essential oil on the windowsill. Peppermint essential oil can prevent flies from gathering on the windows. Its strong scent overwhelms the flies’ senses but does not kill them.

In fact, it acts as a natural insect repellent. To use this trick, simply fill a spray bottle with water and add 10 to 20 drops of pure peppermint essential oil to mix with the water.

Before use, shake well, then spray it on the window frame and windowsill. You can also soak cotton balls in peppermint essential oil and place them on the windowsill.

It is worth noting that this liquid evaporates quickly, so it is advisable to reapply every few days. Additionally, it may be toxic to pets, so if you have pets at home, be sure to pay extra attention.

This method is effective because the active ingredient menthol in peppermint essential oil overwhelms the flies’ highly sensitive receptors, causing them to avoid the windowsill from the start. Therefore, after using it, you are less likely to find heaps of dead flies there.

Flies are attracted to light, heat, and even to dead flies from previous days, so before starting to deal with them, you need to clean the area first. If you suspect they are coming in through tiny cracks, it’s best to seal all cracks around the window frame with caulk.

Flies are particularly fond of flying into homes during warm weather. To avoid attracting flies, be sure to keep everything clean and cover all exposed food. Even the most inconspicuous item could attract them.

Jordan Foster, an expert from the UK pest control company “Fantastic Pest Control,” previously shared two methods to drive away flies that do not require a lot of money.

Foster said that the strong scents of essential oils like peppermint, eucalyptus, lavender, and lemongrass can repel flies. Placing these essential oils in a diffuser or spray bottle or soaking cotton balls in essential oils and placing them where flies frequent can help drive them away.

Furthermore, planting lavender, mint, marigold, or rosemary in flower pots and placing them at the entrance can also help repel flies because the aroma of these plants will make them stay away.
