A powerful typhoon named “Shadul” is approaching Okinawa on Tuesday, August 25th, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The agency has issued warnings of destructive gusts, strong winds, and giant waves expected to hit the region. As a result, hundreds of flights have already been canceled.
The Japan Meteorological Agency forecasts that Typhoon “Shadul” will move in a westward direction in the southern sea area of Japan on Tuesday. It is expected to bring strong winds and massive waves to Okinawa and the Amami region from Tuesday night to Wednesday. In certain areas, the maximum instantaneous wind speed could reach up to 60 meters per second, with waves soaring as high as 11 meters.
Reported by the Okinawa Times, as of August 25th, due to the impact of the 18th strong typhoon of this year, “Shadul,” a total of 433 flights from August 25th to 27th have been canceled in the Okinawa and Amami regions, affecting an estimated 62,700 passengers.
ANA (All Nippon Airways) announced that all flights to and from Naha Airport will be canceled on Wednesday. Some ferry services within Okinawa Prefecture have also been suspended.
Ahead of the impending typhoon, markets and supermarkets in Naha and nearby areas are witnessing a surge of shoppers stocking up on supplies. Some businesses have already adjusted their inventory levels and operating schedules due to concerns about disrupted logistics.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takamichi urged the public to closely monitor weather forecasts and evacuation information. She posted on the social media platform X, stating, “If you feel any danger, do not hesitate, take immediate action to protect your own safety.”
The Japan Meteorological Agency further stated that after passing through Okinawa Prefecture, the typhoon is expected to move westward and later in the week, it will hit the coastal areas of China.
