On May 20th, Yangjiang City in Guangdong Province was hit by a super typhoon, causing severe flooding on many roads and water reaching knee-high levels in residents’ homes. The heavy rainfall led to the evacuation of 13,503 people in the city.
Guangdong issued a statement on May 21st, revealing that Yangjiang experienced a super typhoon on May 20th, with the appearance of a flood that occurs once every 20 years in Mojiang River. The highest water level was expected to reach around 4.3 meters on the afternoon of the 21st, surpassing the alert level of 2.6 meters. The water level may continue to exceed the alert level until the 23rd or 24th, with uncertainty remaining about further rainfall.
According to a report on May 23rd by Jiemian News, during this rainfall event, 13 meteorological and hydrological observation stations in Yangjiang broke the previous 24-hour rainfall record with 653 millimeters. Several roads were severely flooded, especially along the Xilai Old Street riverbank in the Jiangcheng District, where water rose to knee-high levels, and in some areas, even reaching waist-high levels.
Ms. Cai, a resident of Jiaoqiao Xin Road in the Jiangcheng District, mentioned that water started entering her home around 2 am on the 21st, with the water level on the first floor reaching close to her knees at its peak. As of 8 am on the 22nd, their home still had no electricity. Houses facing hers near the river were flooded earlier, and residents have already been evacuated by rescue teams.
The owner of a glasses shop on Taifu Road in the Jiangcheng District remarked that the water levels in low-lying villages around Hedike Road and Taifu Road were higher, causing more severe impacts from the flooding.
The owner of Tengda Stationery Store on Yuzhou Road, about 600 meters from Mojiang River, stated that the water inside the store rose to calf level, causing significant damage to paper products with around 20 boxes of goods soaked in water.
In some villages in the Hekou Town of Yangchun City, Yangjiang, roads were also submerged. An elderly person accidentally fell into the water, grabbed onto a tree, and waited for rescue before being safely taken to the shore.
On May 23rd, a reporter from Nandu N News learned from the local emergency management department that the heavy rainfall in Yangjiang has essentially ceased, and the water levels in all the city’s waterways have dropped below the alert level. The Flood Control Headquarters of Yangjiang City ended its Level IV emergency response on May 23rd at 10:30 AM.
