Starting from June 1st, New York City officially began implementing new regulations for garbage bins (NYC Bins). All residential buildings with 1 to 9 units are now required to use designated covered garbage bins to store their trash. The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) recently announced that the deadline for eligible homeowners to apply for subsidies to purchase garbage bins has been extended to September 7th.
Under the new regulations, homeowners of one to two-family homes who received the School Tax Relief (STAR) or Enhanced STAR exemption or abatement in 2024 or 2025 are still eligible to apply for a $59.3 subsidy to offset the cost of purchasing official garbage bins.
The official garbage bins of New York City are currently available for purchase at Home Depot stores and through the official website.
Homeowners who have purchased official garbage bins through Home Depot, DoorDash, Uber Eats, or other delivery platforms can apply for reimbursement of subsidies.
When applying, homeowners must provide the voucher number on the notice sent by the New York City Department of Finance (DOF). The city government encourages residents to submit applications online, but paper applications sent by mail are also accepted.
Residents who are eligible but have not yet purchased garbage bins can buy official bins first and then apply for subsidies later.
In addition to providing the voucher number, applicants must also submit proof of purchase, such as receipts and other relevant documents.
