In recent days, earthquakes have been frequent in Liunan District, Liuzhou, Guangxi. On the afternoon of May 20th, another earthquake of magnitude 3.7 occurred, with a shallow depth of only 5 kilometers.
The China Earthquake Networks Center officially determined that at 16:23 on May 20th, a 3.7 magnitude earthquake hit Liunan District, Liuzhou City, Guangxi (latitude 24.42 degrees, longitude 109.28 degrees), with a depth of 5 kilometers.
The news quickly became a hot topic on social media platform Weibo.
Netizens commented, “The seismic source is getting shallower.” “The depth of this earthquake is too shallow, I’ve never seen anything like it.” “Really, only 5 kilometers deep? That’s shallow. It was so loud, it woke me up.” “The shaking this time is quite strong, feels like more than 3.8.” “Earthquakes every day, first this morning and now this afternoon again.”
“Earthquakes and rain, making it impossible for people to live.” “People in Liuzhou now have to deal with both earthquakes and floods.”
“This Liuzhou earthquake feels very strange. It’s not in a major earthquake zone, and there hasn’t been an earthquake in modern times. The last one was said to be during the Qing Dynasty Kangxi period, which was centuries ago. Suddenly there’s a 5.2 magnitude quake and two more after that, isn’t it strange? Not just Liuzhou, the entire Guangxi region is not in a major earthquake zone, the geological structure is relatively stable, yet it still happened.”
Earlier on May 17th, there were two earthquakes in one day in the area. At 7:46 on the 17th, a 2.5 magnitude earthquake struck Liunan District with a depth of 10 kilometers; at 17:07, there was a 3.2 magnitude earthquake with the same depth.
At 00:21 on the 18th, a 5.2 magnitude earthquake hit Liunan District at a depth of 8 kilometers. Cities including Liuzhou, Laibin, Guigang, Nanning, Baise, Guilin, Laibin, Hezhou, Hechi, and Wuzhou felt the tremors. Three people were reported dead, four injured, and 58 houses damaged (numbers are not fully confirmed).
On the night of the 18th, at 21:44, another 5.2 magnitude earthquake occurred with the same depth of 8 kilometers. Local residents reported that the earthquake was announced as 5.4 and the shaking was stronger than the early morning quake. People in various locations in Guangdong felt the tremors, and residents in Guizhou, Sichuan, and other areas also reported feeling the earthquake.
