On June 8th, two earthquakes struck Kangding City, Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, with magnitudes of 4.5 and 4.3 respectively. Residents in multiple areas reported feeling the tremors distinctly.
According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, a 4.5 magnitude earthquake hit Kangding City at 5:07 am on June 8th, with a depth of 10 kilometers and the epicenter located at 29.90 degrees north latitude and 101.91 degrees east longitude.
The earthquake was 12 kilometers away from Kangding City, 31 kilometers from Luding County, 85 kilometers from Tianquan County, 86 kilometers from Shimian County, 88 kilometers from Yajiang County, 17 kilometers from Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, and 225 kilometers from Chengdu City.
More than 13 hours later, another earthquake occurred in the same area.
The China Earthquake Networks Center determined that at 6:52 pm on June 8th, a 4.3 magnitude earthquake struck Kangding City, with a depth of 9 kilometers and the epicenter located at 29.92 degrees north latitude and 101.95 degrees east longitude.
The earthquake was 9 kilometers away from Kangding City, 27 kilometers from Luding County, 81 kilometers from Tianquan County, 86 kilometers from Shimian County, 88 kilometers from Yingjing County, 14 kilometers from Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, and 220 kilometers from Chengdu City.
The news quickly became a hot topic on Weibo, with residents of Sichuan Province sharing their experiences of the strong tremors.
One internet user in Sichuan commented, “Is it really just a 4.3 magnitude quake with such strong shaking?” Another said, “I couldn’t stand up because of the shaking on the eighth floor.” Some reported being awakened by the loud noise and shaking, with comments like “I was shaken awake in Kangding,” and “I was shaken and scared awake in Luding.” Others mentioned feeling the tremors in different regions, such as Leshan, Ya’an, Chengdu, and Meishan.
“I was awoken by the earthquake in the morning, and now I feel dizzy from the shaking again,” said one resident, expressing fear due to the consecutive tremors in the area.
