On September 4th, many netizens captured photos showing a large green halo in the night sky of Quanzhou, Fujian, resembling the Northern Lights. Videos displayed the entire sky in a deep green hue, which made people feel uncomfortable under the night’s darkness.
This phenomenon prompted heated discussions among netizens. Many people’s initial reactions were, “Has the Aurora Borealis come south?” or “Have aliens arrived?” There were also concerns raised about whether this could be a precursor to imminent natural disasters like earthquakes or tsunamis.

Regarding this strange phenomenon, on September 4th, employees of Xiangzhi Center Fishing Port Limited in Shishi City responded to the mainland media, stating that the green light was actually used for squid fishing operations on fishing boats. These types of lights are installed on fishing boats, and whether they are turned on or off depends on the fishing boat’s operational schedule.
Officials from the Xiangzhi Town government stated that the green light in the sky was from the fishing boats.
However, netizens questioned the official explanation, asking, “Fishing during a typhoon?” “With strong winds and rough seas, which fishing boat would go out to fish?” “Did the fishing boats only turn on the lights this time? Did they never use them before?”
Typhoon “Shadel” had a very peculiar path. After making landfalls in Yuhuan City, Taizhou, and Longwan District, Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province on August 28th, it had weakened to a low-pressure area. However, it “resurrected” into a typhoon on the morning of September 1st and made its third landfall in China on September 3rd. The third landfall was in Gulei, Zhangpu County, Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province.
Many provinces, including Fujian and Zhejiang, suffered severe damages due to the typhoon.
