Chile’s central and southern regions have recently been hit by a fierce storm, triggering severe flooding and strong winds. Authorities confirmed on Saturday (August 1) that at least 2 people have died as a result. Multiple regions have issued emergency evacuation orders, marking another serious natural disaster for the country following a deadly storm a few weeks ago.
According to reports from Agence France-Presse, Maximo Pavez, the Deputy Minister of the Interior of Chile, stated that in the Los Rios region in southern Chile, two individuals tragically lost their lives when trees fell and crushed the vehicles they were in.
According to the Chilean National Emergency Office (SENAPRED), this intense storm has also led to nearly 350 injuries and property losses. In addition, with multiple rivers overflowing and bursting their banks, over 2,000 people are stranded.
Facing threats from winds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour and flooding, the National Emergency Office has urgently issued 13 evacuation warnings. Currently, the severely affected Maule and Los Lagos regions are on high alert, with multiple towns in a state of vigilance.
This South American country had just experienced a powerful storm last month (July) that resulted in 13 deaths and approximately 20,000 homes being damaged.
