4.5 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Kuqa City in Aksu Prefecture, Xinjiang

On May 2nd at 6:17 am, a 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Kuche City in the Aksu region of Xinjiang, China, with its epicenter at a depth of 18 kilometers.

According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, the epicenter of this earthquake was located at 41.29 degrees north latitude and 83.92 degrees east longitude. Just two minutes later at 6:19 am, another earthquake of magnitude 4.3 hit Kuche City at a depth of 23 kilometers, with coordinates of 41.23 degrees north latitude and 83.90 degrees east longitude.

Local residents described the tremors as “strongly felt in Korla” and mentioned being “woken up from sleep by the shaking.” Reports indicate that a series of earthquakes have been occurring in the region recently.

On April 29th, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck at 3:16 am followed by a 3.0 magnitude tremor at 3:58 am, and then a 4.3 magnitude earthquake at 3:20 pm the same day.

The sequence of seismic activities continued on April 30th with a 3.1 magnitude earthquake at 6:38 pm, a 3.0 magnitude tremor at 8:49 pm, and a 3.9 magnitude earthquake at 9:15 pm.

The recurring earthquakes have caused concern among local residents and authorities as the region experiences ongoing seismic activity.
