Typhoon White Dolphin rapidly strengthens, heads towards southeast Japan

Taiwanese meteorological experts stated that Typhoon Baihaidun is expected to turn west-northwest over the next 5 days, approaching the southeast of Japan and rapidly intensifying into a powerful typhoon, nearing the record set by this year’s “Wind King Bawi”.

Associate Professor Wu Derong of the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at National Central University in Taiwan made the announcement today (28th) in the “Weather Machine Classroom” column of the Meteorological Application Promotion Foundation. According to the latest European model simulations, there will be a slight decrease in moisture over the next two days. The southeastern and southern regions may experience sporadic short-term rainfall, with localized thunderstorms in the mountains in the afternoon. Some adjacent plains may also be affected. Before the rain arrives, the weather will be hot, so precautions for sun protection and heatstroke prevention are advised.

Wu Derong further explained that the latest model simulations indicate that the Pacific high pressure will slightly strengthen on July 30th and 31st, leading to a gradual stabilization of the atmosphere. There may still be localized thunderstorms in the mountains in the afternoon and some nearby plains. Daytime temperatures will be hot throughout the country, so sun protection and heatstroke prevention are crucial. From August 1st to 6th, the Pacific high pressure will dominate, resulting in stable atmospheric conditions and clear, hot weather across the country. Sun protection and heatstroke prevention measures are recommended during this period.

Regarding Typhoon Baihaidun, Wu Derong pointed out that over the next 5 days, it will shift west-northwest towards the southeast of Japan, intensifying rapidly and easily surpassing the threshold of a “severe” typhoon, with an average wind speed of 58 meters per second, coming close to this year’s record set by “Wind King Bawi” with an average wind speed of 60 meters per second.

According to the Taiwan Central Weather Bureau, Typhoon Baihaidun’s center was located at 13.0 degrees north latitude and 172.7 degrees east longitude at 8 a.m. today, moving at a speed of 21 kilometers per hour in the west-northwest direction. The central pressure is 980 hectopascals, with a maximum near-center wind speed of 28 meters per second, peak gusts of 35 meters per second, and an average storm radius of 120 kilometers (130 kilometers on the northwest side, 130 kilometers on the northeast side, 120 kilometers on the southwest side, and 110 kilometers on the southeast side).

Wu Derong emphasized that the latest European model ensemble simulations suggest that due to Typhoon Baihaidun’s path through warm sea temperatures, low vertical wind shear, and a high-level strong diffluent environment – meeting the three conditions for rapid intensification, it is expected to become a typical “super Holy Infant year” large and strong typhoon. However, there is no threat to Taiwan in the next 10 days.
