Electricity outage causes shared bike to lock unexpectedly, Ph.D. student in Xiamen suffers severe injuries.

In Xiamen, Fujian Province, last year, a doctoral student named Xiao Li fell into a ten-degree disability after the “Hello Campus Assistance Vehicle” he was riding suddenly lost power and locked up.

According to ZAKER News, on June 5, 2025, Xiao Li scanned a QR code at the east gate of the school to unlock a Hello Campus Assistance Vehicle and ride it to the laboratory, a journey that should have taken only 9 minutes. However, unexpectedly, the vehicle lost power midway, leading to the rear wheel locking up abruptly. Xiao Li and the vehicle tumbled to the ground, with the weight of the vehicle pressing heavily on his right leg.

Medical examinations revealed that Xiao Li suffered a fracture of the lateral platform of the right tibia, a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the knee joint, and a tear in the lateral meniscus of the knee. Over the course of nearly a year, he underwent multiple surgeries and rehabilitation treatments in different cities, significantly impacting his academic pursuits.

The vehicle malfunction investigation report issued by Shanghai Hello Inclusive Technology Co., Ltd confirmed that the involved vehicle experienced a power failure, which was related to the user’s feedback of falling due to a power outage while riding. However, the two parties could not reach an agreement on compensation.

Initially, Hello proposed a compensation of a few hundred yuan through riding insurance. Later, they suggested waiting for Xiao Li to complete all rehabilitation treatments and disability assessments before calculating the compensation. Due to the prolonged treatment period and the possibility of a second surgery, Xiao Li was concerned about the uncertainties of delayed compensation and thus did not accept the proposal.

It was not until December 9, 2025, that Xiao Li was determined to have a ten-degree disability. On December 23 of the same year, he filed a lawsuit against Shanghai Hello Inclusive Technology Co., Ltd at the Xiang’an District Court in Xiamen, claiming a total of 264,549.08 yuan for medical expenses, disability compensation, lost wages, mental distress compensation, and appraisal fees.

On July 17 of this year, Shanghai Hello Inclusive Technology Co., Ltd and Xiao Li reached a pre-trial settlement, agreeing to pay Xiao Li a lump sum of 215,000 yuan.

Reflecting on his ordeal, Xiao Li lamented that obtaining evidence was extremely difficult during his nearly year-long process of seeking justice as the backend data, such as the vehicle’s operating status, time of failure, and riding trajectory, were solely controlled by the Hello platform. Ultimately, the truth was only revealed through surveillance footage on campus.

In recent years, mainland China has seen a rise in accidents where shared bicycles suddenly lock up, resulting in injuries to users.

In March of this year, Mr. Zhao from Langfang, Hebei Province, suffered multiple injuries after the rear wheel of a Hello bike he was riding unexpectedly locked up, causing him to fall from the bicycle.

At the end of August 2025, Ms. Ma from Shanghai scanned a Qingju bicycle, but within a few minutes of riding, the bicycle automatically locked up, resulting in three fractures in her right foot and soft tissue injuries to both legs.

According to reports from Penghu News, industry insiders have disclosed that there were approximately 700 similar injury accidents nationwide in 2025.

As previously reported by CCTV, aside from vehicle malfunctions, the frequency of accidents could also be attributed to the excessive deployment of shared bicycles by platforms. Seeking to dominate the market, some shared-bicycle platforms excessively deploy vehicles in certain urban areas without adhering to basic requirements, leading to situations where multiple bicycles share the same QR code. This chaos can trigger system errors, causing other bicycles in operation to be locked accidentally.
