In a rare and unprecedented event, a massive forest fire broke out in the famous historical landmark Fontainebleau Forest, located in the outskirts of Paris, France, on the evening of July 12th. Fueled by high temperatures and strong winds, the fire rapidly spread, and as of the evening of the 13th, the fire remains uncontrolled, causing significant impacts on the local ecology, transportation, and resident safety.
According to media reports, as of the evening of the 13th, the fire has consumed approximately 1,300 hectares of forest land (about 5% of the entire forest area), making it the most severe forest fire disaster the region has faced since 1921. The French government has urgently deployed 800 firefighters and multiple firefighting planes and helicopters to the scene for round-the-clock extinguishing efforts.
Due to the severity of the situation and the location in the greater Paris area, French authorities have mobilized large aerial firefighting aircraft, including Canadair water bombers, from the typically drier and hotter southern regions to assist in Paris. The firefighting aircraft are directly collecting water from the Seine River flowing through the center of Paris to douse the flames.
As the fire poses a serious threat to the tranquil villages surrounding the forest, hundreds of local residents and tourists have been evacuated. At the same time, the fire has severely disrupted the traffic layout during the peak summer travel season. Sections of the key A6 highway connecting Paris with the southern regions of France have been forced to close; high-speed and regular train services to and from the Paris-Lyon train station have also experienced significant delays.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez pointed out that due to the discovery of approximately 10 different ignition points within a 1,000-meter radius in the fire zone, the fire is highly likely to be the result of deliberate arson. The prosecutor’s office in Fontainebleau later confirmed that two individuals have been arrested and detained on suspicion of arson, with authorities launching a thorough investigation into the matter.
President Macron of France expressed on social media platform X on the 13th that all available resources have been mobilized to extinguish what he described as an “unprecedented” wildfire.
The Paris metropolitan area where Fontainebleau Forest is located remains under a red alert for high temperatures, accompanied by gusty winds, creating extremely unfavorable weather conditions for firefighting operations.
