Xinjiang’s Ili Region hit by 4.8-magnitude earthquake, strong tremors felt in many places

On June 5th at midnight, a 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck near the city of Horgos in Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang, China.

According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, the earthquake occurred at 00:19 on the 5th, at a latitude of 44.55 degrees north and a longitude of 80.54 degrees east, with a focal depth of 17 kilometers.

Local netizens shared on social media that during the earthquake, “the bed and house suddenly shook two or three times,” and “Yining City trembled a bit.”

Tremors were also felt in neighboring areas such as Wenquan County, Kekedala, Sailimu Lake, and Almaty.

As of now, there have been no official reports on the impact of the earthquake.
