Guangdong heavy rain floods Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macau underwater tunnel, collapses Enping bridge

China’s southern region continues to be hit by heavy rain, with multiple areas in Guangdong province suffering from disasters. On May 20th, the 24-kilometer-long underwater tunnel of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Passage experienced flooding. The town of Nagi in Enping, Jiangmen was attacked by floods, resulting in the collapse of several bridges.

On May 20th, Guangdong cities including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Yangjiang, Huizhou, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, and Shanwei issued the highest-level red rainstorm warning signals. During the night of May 20th, Shenzhen experienced heavy rainfall, causing the underwater tunnel of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Passage to be submerged, trapping numerous vehicles.

Public records indicate that the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Passage is a super-cross-sea tunnel project connecting Shenzhen and Zhongshan, spanning the Lingdingyang section of the Pearl River Estuary, with an underwater tunnel length of approximately 6.845 kilometers.

Videos posted by netizens showed severe flooding inside the underwater tunnel of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Passage around 8:40 pm, with water levels rising up to the calves, leading to many vehicles being stranded.

Some netizens reported being trapped in the tunnel for nearly an hour, likening the experience to swimming in the underwater tunnel of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Passage.

Overseas platforms also saw many users commenting, “Hehe, while CCP infrastructure may be cheap, its lifespan can be deadly.” and “This reminds me of the tunnel flooding in Zhengzhou, Henan.”

Shenzhen traffic police implemented temporary traffic control at the entrance of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Passage on the riverside highway at 9:19 pm, clearing the water by 11:11 pm.

According to local media reports, Yangchun in Yangjiang recorded a 24-hour rainfall of 1053.5 millimeters on the night of the 20th. The Jiangmen Hydrological Bureau issued multiple alerts for river floods.

The town of Nagi in Enping, Jiangmen was hit by floods the previous day, with the Nagi Second Bridge in the town center collapsing. Residents reported water levels reaching one meter high, stating they hadn’t seen such heavy rainfall in decades.

The Chinese Ministry of Water Resources predicts that significant floods may occur in the Beijiang and Hanjiang rivers in the Pearl River Basin, urging heightened attention to risks such as floods in small and medium rivers, flash floods, and urban waterlogging.
