New Yorkers have the chance to experience camping in Central Park this summer. The New York City Parks Department announced that from August 8 to September 18, they will be hosting “Family Camping” events, with the most anticipated event at Central Park scheduled for the evening of August 14. Participants must register through a weekly lottery system, and those selected can enjoy a free overnight stay in this urban green space.
The activities will be led by the Urban Park Rangers under the New York City Parks Department. Participants can set up tents in the park to experience activities such as night hiking, wildlife observation, campfire storytelling, roasting marshmallows, and stargazing. Tents will be provided by the organizers, and participants only need to bring their sleeping bags, bedding, and food. Each event is expected to accept around 30 people, usually comprising 5 to 8 family groups. However, individuals or friends are also welcome to join, aiming to get more people who have never camped before to connect with nature.
In addition to Central Park, the activities will also tour through parks in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, Staten Island, with the final event on September 18 at the Blue Heron Nature Center and Rockaway Beach. Since staying overnight in city parks is normally prohibited, this event provides a rare opportunity for the public to legally camp in urban parks.
Marc Sanchez, the supervisor of the Urban Park Rangers, stated that “Family Camping” has been held for over 20 years and each event typically attracts about 300 registrants, demonstrating its popularity. He mentioned that many participants are first-time campers, and some fall in love with camping, eventually embarking on real outdoor camping adventures to places like the Adirondack Mountains, Glacier National Park, and Yellowstone National Park.
This initiative not only provides a unique experience for New Yorkers but also encourages a deeper connection with nature and outdoor activities in an urban setting. The “Family Camping” events offer a gateway for individuals and families alike to explore the beauty of camping within the vibrant landscape of New York City.
