Recently, in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province, a group of 50 wild elephants were spotted entering a village at midnight foraging for food, leaving local residents astonished as they had never seen such a large group of wild elephants in the past two decades.
According to reports from CCTV news and other media outlets, the incident occurred on the night of August 24th around 11 p.m., when about 50 wild Asian elephants entered Nayong Village in Shangyong Village, Mohan Town, roaming around residential areas, farmlands, and fish ponds.
Local villagers mentioned that wild elephants occasionally appear in the village, but they had never witnessed such a significant gathering of wild elephants in the past 20 years.
Fortunately, the elephants this time displayed a gentle demeanor and did not charge at residential buildings or disturb the villagers. After lingering in the village for several hours, the group of elephants voluntarily returned to the forest around 3 a.m. on the 25th without causing any harm to humans.
Currently, the population of wild Asian elephants in Yunnan is close to 400. Public data shows that since the 1960s, Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture began planting rubber and tea, leading to a decline in food resources for Asian elephants. With the increasing number of Asian elephants in recent years, local forests in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture can no longer meet their food needs, prompting the elephants to venture out in search of resources.
Prior to this incident, in 2021, Xishuangbanna, Yunnan had experienced the “northward migration of elephants” event, during which many farmers’ crops such as corn and sugarcane were eaten by the migrating elephants.
