Typhoon “Shadel” weakened to a tropical depression after making landfall and continues to move deeper inland in China. The low-pressure system, along with the southward cold air, is affecting southern regions. The center of heavy rain is shifting westward from Jiangxi to areas such as Hunan, Guangxi, etc. Heavy rain is expected in southern Hunan, northeastern Guangxi, and western parts of Hainan Island, with heavy rainfall in the southern region expected to continue until early September.
On August 28, “Shadel” made landfall in Yuhuan, Taizhou, and Longwan, Wenzhou in Zhejiang with maximum wind speeds of 12 levels near the center during landfall. It then passed through Fujian and weakened.
According to data released by the Chinese meteorological department, as of 8 a.m. on August 29, the center of “Shadel” is located in Yongfeng County, Ji’an, Jiangxi, with maximum wind speeds of 7 levels on the outskirts, moving west-southwest at a speed of 20 to 25 kilometers per hour. It is expected to enter Hunan on the evening of the 29th and move over Hunan on the 30th towards Guangxi and the two provinces.
During the landfall of “Shadel,” Zhejiang experienced heavy rain in parts of Wenzhou, Taizhou, southern Ningbo, Lishui, and southeastern Quzhou, with some areas experiencing heavy to torrential rainfall. In total, 283 townships in the province received cumulative rainfall exceeding 50 millimeters, with 84 of them exceeding 100 millimeters, and 2 exceeding 200 millimeters. The highest recorded rainfall occurred in Shuitou Chaoyang, Pingyang County, at 204 millimeters. Along the central and southern coasts of Zhejiang, wind speeds reached levels 10 to 12, with some areas experiencing levels 13 to 14.
The Central Meteorological Observatory continued to issue a yellow alert for heavy rain at 18:00 on the 29th. It is predicted that from 8 p.m. on the 29th to 8:00 p.m. on the 30th, there will be heavy to torrential rain in parts of central and southern Hunan, northern and southwestern Jiangxi, northeastern Guangxi, northeastern and coastal areas of Guangdong, and western areas of Hainan Island. In some areas, particularly in southern Hunan, northeastern Guangxi, and western Hainan Island, heavy rainfall of 100 to 220 millimeters is expected.
The heavy rain in Guangxi is expected to continue until the 31st. The Guangxi Meteorological Department stated that on the 29th, heavier rainfall would mainly occur in the northeast of the region, with rain intensifying on the 30th and expanding to the east and south, with locally severe rainfall accompanied by short-term thunderstorms and winds of levels 8 to 10. On the 31st, moderate to heavy rain will still be present in eastern Guangxi and coastal areas, with local torrential or heavy rainfall.
On the afternoon of the 29th, China Weather Network reported that as the remnants of “Shadel” continued southward, a monsoon convergence zone is expected to form from the coasts of Guangxi to the eastern regions of Jiangnan. Cold air will enter from the north side while the south side will continue to transport moisture from the South China Sea, making it difficult for the heavy rain conditions to dissipate quickly.
From the end of August to early September, frequent heavy rain is expected in Jiangnan and Hu’nan. Data from the Zhejiang Meteorological Department indicates that significant precipitation may occur again in Zhejiang on September 1 to 2, with moderate to heavy rainfall expected in northern Zhejiang and coastal areas, along with localized heavy rain.
The continuous rainfall may trigger flash floods, landslides, mudslides, urban and rural floods, and small to medium river floods. Guangxi has already experienced consecutive heavy rainfall, and some areas still face risks of overlapping rainfall.
