World Cup Eve: Huochu Launches Emergency Operations Center

New York – Governor Hochu announced on Wednesday (June 10) that the state’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will be activated from June 10 to July 20 to address a series of historic summer events, including the FIFA World Cup, Sail4th 250 yacht race, and the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations.

The center will remain operational until July 20 and will be responsible for handling any state-level monitoring or response needs for emergencies across the state. Governor Hochu urged residents to prepare for several days of high temperatures expected to affect multiple regions of the state until the weekend. Thunderstorms with the potential for power outages, fallen trees, and localized flooding may also occur on Thursday and Friday.

“Public safety is our top priority this summer, and we are prepared to ensure that New York residents and visitors can fully enjoy the exciting activities taking place in our state,” stated Governor Hochu. “However, you can take measures to protect yourself and your family. Stay hydrated, dress appropriately for the weather, and if participating in group activities, establish a prearranged meeting point in case of separation.”

Simultaneously with the activation of the Emergency Operations Center, the State Fire Operations Center will also be activated. Additionally, staff from the State Emergency Management Office will be deployed to regional command centers across the state and New Jersey’s Emergency Operations Center to handle affairs related to game days and activities around July 4. World Cup match days at New York-New Jersey sports venues are scheduled for June 13, 16, 22, 25, 27, 30, July 5, and July 19.

The New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) has prioritized coordination and preparedness among state, local, and federal partners, conducting exercises at 993 locations statewide and evaluating 240 critical infrastructure sites, including stadiums, shopping centers, colleges, airports, transportation hubs, and other gathering places. DHSES has also organized large-scale drills at major transportation hubs in New York City, such as Pennsylvania Station and Grand Central Station.

Governor Hochu previously enhanced transportation convenience by signing legislation to extend bar and restaurant operating hours during the World Cup and announced a free viewing party for the World Cup finals in Central Park.
