Washington state officials in the northwest Pacific coast of the United States, also known as Washington state, announced on Saturday (August 1) evening that strong winds and high temperatures have caused wildfires to rapidly spread in the state, burning an area of over 250,000 acres. This has led to widespread evacuations in the Spokane area and power outages for over 13,000 households. Governor Bob Ferguson declared a state of emergency in Washington.
Commissioner of Public Lands in Washington, Dave Upthegrove, held a video press conference stating that about 4,000 people are working hard to extinguish dozens of fires across the state.
The unusually high temperatures and strong winds have exacerbated the record-breaking wildfires across the state, prompting Governor Ferguson to declare a state of emergency on Saturday. The National Weather Service issued a red alert for “extremely dangerous conditions” in the eastern part of Washington state.
“Our state is facing a serious situation caused by multiple fires, and we express our deepest condolences to all Washington state residents who have lost their homes,” Governor Ferguson said, adding that the strong winds and high temperatures over the weekend will make firefighting efforts even more challenging.
Officials have stated that there have been no reports of casualties related to the wildfires. The area consumed by wildfires in Washington state has exceeded 250,000 acres. As the fires continue to spread, authorities have issued the highest level of evacuation orders – Level 3 evacuation orders – for several communities in the Spokane area. Emergency management officials are urging residents to “evacuate immediately” due to the critical situation.
The Spokane area has also experienced widespread power outages. According to data released by the American energy company Avista Utilities, as of 11 p.m. local time on Saturday, nearly 13,400 households were affected by power outages.
On Saturday night, thick smoke still lingered in the Spokane area, as firefighters worked hard to extinguish three major wildfires raging in the area. Helicopters flew over the smoke on Saturday, spraying water to contain the fires. Despite some improvement in the situation on Sunday, firefighters still face extremely challenging wind conditions.
Commissioner Upthegrove stated that approximately 450,000 acres of land have been consumed by wildfires in Washington state so far this summer.
“This is very abnormal… Wildfires are raging across Washington state,” he said.
The “Old Trails Fire” is one of the three major wildfires sweeping through Spokane. George Geissler, a forestry official in Washington state, stated that this fire has spread to 3,000 acres and threatens 4,000 structures.
Geissler noted that the Spokane fires are among the five “major complex fires” in Washington state. The largest of these is the Kaiser Canyon Fire in the northeastern part of the state, covering an area of approximately 134,000 acres.
Washington state officials announced in a press conference that in addition to the National Guard, firefighters from over a dozen states are assisting in firefighting efforts.
“The scenes we are witnessing are heartbreaking,” said Gent Welsh, an official with the state’s National Guard. “As the sun sets and rises, we are all shocked by some of the sights we see outside.”
