Severe Rainstorms in Leshan, Sichuan, Floodwaters Submerge Second Floor in Mabian County

Recently, mainland China has been hit by frequent heavy rainstorms. After flooding in Guangxi, Sichuan Province has also been under attack by heavy rainfall. The heavy rain has triggered flash floods. Videos taken by residents in Mabian County, Leshan City, Sichuan, show floodwaters reaching the second floor of some houses.

According to the official report from the Mabian Yi Autonomous County in Leshan City, Sichuan, from the night of July 10 to the morning of July 11, the county experienced heavy rainfall, with some areas seeing torrential rain and even super torrential rain. Houses in some towns were flooded, crops damaged, and roads temporarily cut off, with cars being washed away by the flood. In Gao shitou village, Minjian Town, the accumulated rainfall reached a high of 254.5 millimeters, with the maximum hourly rainfall reaching 110.9 millimeters.

Reporting by “On the Scene”, on July 11, heavy rainfall in Leshan, Sichuan triggered flash floods, sweeping away vehicles at an alarming rate, leading to the emergency evacuation of thousands of local residents. Damaged businesses have reported losses amounting to tens of thousands. Tables, chairs, refrigerators, surrounding facilities, basically everything has been destroyed.

Cover News reported that from the evening of July 10 to the morning of July 11, Mabian Yi Autonomous County in Leshan, Sichuan, suffered from heavy rainfall, with 16 stations recording heavy rain, 18 stations recording torrential rain, and 1 station experiencing super torrential rain. Houses in some towns were flooded, crops damaged, and roads temporarily cut off, with 4 cars being washed away.

A member of Weibo with 10.13 million followers, “Chinese Weather Enthusiast”, posted that in the early hours of July 12, heavy rainfall hit the mountainous areas of Leshan, Ya’an, Chengdu, and Guangyuan in Sichuan, with Mabian and other areas receiving over 250 millimeters of super torrential rain within a few hours. They warned that on the night of the 12th to the 13th, the western part of the Sichuan Basin would still be at the forefront of the clash between warm and cold air masses, urging vigilance against extreme rainfall that could trigger flash floods and geological disasters.

On July 11, the Sichuan Provincial Meteorological Bureau continued to issue a blue alert for heavy rain: from 20:00 on July 11 to 20:00 on July 12, there will be heavy rain in the western parts of Ya’an, Leshan, Yibin, Meishan, and Chengdu, with local areas experiencing severe torrential rain, with maximum hourly rainfall ranging from 50 to 80 millimeters. Additionally, in the eastern part of Ganzi Prefecture, the north-central part of Liangshan Prefecture, and the western regions of Panzhihua, Deyang, Mianyang, Zigong, Neijiang, and Luzhou, there will be heavy rain to torrential rain in some areas, with maximum hourly rainfall of 30 to 60 millimeters. Heavy rainfall will be accompanied by strong convective weather such as thunderstorms and strong winds. It is expected that in the next 24 hours, more than 5 cities and prefectures will receive rainfall exceeding 50 millimeters, with some areas seeing over 100 millimeters of rainfall.
