On July 19, in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, a female blogger’s encounter with a stranger at a restaurant has sparked controversy. The topic of “Invited by Mr. Huang to a Private Room” trended at the top of the hot search list.
According to the China News Weekly, the female blogger in Hangzhou went to dine alone at a local restaurant when a male customer, through a staff member, invited her to join him in a private room for a meal, saying, “You’ll understand when you see him there.” She refused, citing unfamiliarity with the man, and decided to livestream the incident for evidence.
In the live stream, she described being approached by a staff member who relayed a message that “Mr. Huang” requested her presence in a private room. She expressed her lack of acquaintance with Mr. Huang and questioned why, if he knew her, he didn’t approach her directly instead of sending someone else. To preempt any potential risks, she started a live recording on her phone to document the entire process. About half an hour later, she left the restaurant along with other patrons.
Reported by Orange Interactive, local authorities stated that the incident was a misunderstanding – Mr. Huang, a regular customer at the restaurant visiting for the first time, mistook the blogger for a friend and had the invitation passed on through a staff member. The restaurant has formally apologized to the blogger, and a settlement has been reached between the two parties.
The report revealed that the restaurant staff, without verifying whether the two knew each other, passed on a private invitation improperly. Currently, the restaurant has closed for rectification.
Despite being labeled a “misunderstanding,” the logic of relaying an invitation through intermediaries continues to face criticism from numerous netizens.
Many netizens questioned the situation: “When encountering acquaintances at a restaurant, isn’t it common sense to personally verify it?” “Mr. Huang’s behavior is sketchy; typically when seeing an acquaintance, one should approach directly, right? What’s the point of a staff member relaying the message?” “I don’t believe that Mr. Huang mistook the person.”
A Weibo user expressed disbelief at the situation, highlighting that even after multiple refusals, the restaurant delayed serving the blogger, ignoring her service requests. The user emphasized the restaurant’s handling of the situation was frightening, and it could deter customers from dining there in the future.
Weibo Smart Search commented that the incident was indeed illogical. Standard social etiquette should involve personal greetings, but the male customer not only hid in a private room and had the staff relay the message, but also confirmed the blogger’s presence, and the restaurant even stopped serving after multiple refusals. This deliberate avoidance of direct contact and pressuring tactics clearly goes against basic social norms and respect principles, leading to public scrutiny.
The incident is still unfolding. According to Qianjiang Video, in response to similar issues in the dining scene, lawyer Zhou Zhaocheng from Beijing Anjian Law Firm mentioned that besides ensuring customers’ safety, restaurant operators should also maintain a normal dining environment and peace for guests.
He stated that while the man’s mistaken identity was a subjective misunderstanding, the staff relaying a private invitation without verifying the relationship and continuing communication after the customer’s refusal might involve issues with service management regulations.
The lawyer pointed out that dining establishments should establish clearer boundaries for staff services to avoid intervening in customers’ private social activities, especially when it comes to invitations from strangers, they should exercise more caution.
The discussion on this incident continues on the internet.
