On April 14th, in the Xinghu City residential area of Hexin, Shantou, Guangdong, a woman threw a large amount of Hong Kong dollars out of her window, mainly consisting of bills with denominations of 500 and 1000. This unusual incident lasted for about 20 minutes, attracting nearby residents and passersby who gathered around to watch and scramble for the bills.
Videos captured by several netizens on April 14th show a woman in a high-rise residential building shouting loudly as she tossed bills out of the window. On the street outside the community, a crowd gathered to eagerly pick up the scattered money. Many netizens confirmed that the bills were indeed Hong Kong dollars, with denominations of 500 and 1000. Some even shared photos of the money they managed to collect underneath the videos.
According to a report by “Extreme Vision News”, a resident stated that around 1pm on the 14th, a resident in a high-rise unit of the Xinghu City community suddenly began throwing a large amount of Hong Kong dollars from the balcony, causing a frenzy among the people below who rushed to grab the bills. The bills floated in the air, landing within the community, on the pedestrian walkways of the street, and even on the roofs of nearby buildings. Many people were seen picking up handfuls of the money.
Videos captured by residents show a woman continuously showering the area with bills from the balcony, then going back inside to fetch more bills to toss down. On the ground, many bystanders reached out to grab the falling money as it fluttered down from the sky.
Later that afternoon, a reporter from “Extreme Vision News” contacted a nearby shop owner who claimed to have found several bills, all of which were legitimate 1000 and 500 Hong Kong dollar notes. The shop owner initially thought they were fake but later confirmed their authenticity upon inspection. It was mentioned that the woman from the upper floor continued to distribute money for about 20 minutes until the police arrived after receiving reports and managed to bring the situation under control.
Reportedly, staff members of the Xinghu City community property confirmed the incident and stated that some residents returned the money they found to the property management. The property staff emphasized that the currency scattered was indeed genuine. They mentioned that it was a resident from the community who threw the money, but the reason for doing so remains unclear, including the amount thrown. They urged residents who found Hong Kong dollars to turn them in to either the property management or the police station.
An official from the Zhuchi Police Station of Longhu District Public Security Bureau in Shantou stated that the incident is currently under investigation and encouraged residents to voluntarily surrender any Hong Kong dollars they picked up to the police station.
