Aiming at the Chinese Communist Threat, US Defense Contractor Introduces Red Wolf and Green Wolf Missiles

On July 18, 2025, American technology company and defense contractor L3 Harris Technologies (referred to as L3) unveiled two new missiles on Thursday, July 17th, aimed at providing the US military with long-range strike options that are both powerful and cost-effective. This move comes as the US military seeks to replenish weapon stocks and find weapons capable of deterring China’s ambitions in the Pacific.

The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has lasted for over three years with no signs of ending. This attrition war highlights the need for a large quantity of cost-effective weapons. The introduction of L3’s “Red Wolf” and “Green Wolf” aims to meet this demand. The strategy focuses on preparing a large quantity of relatively inexpensive ammunition to ensure military readiness and adaptability.

According to L3, “Red Wolf” and “Green Wolf” are the first products in the company’s expanding line of multi-role vehicle systems, which can be easily integrated and launched from air, ground, or sea platforms, providing flexible and modular capabilities for long-range strike and electronic warfare missions.

Top executives at L3 stated in an interview with Reuters that the basic version of L3’s new missiles will cost around $300,000 once fully operational. Currently, low-rate initial production is underway in Ashburn, Virginia, with customers such as the Pentagon expected to purchase approximately 1,000 units annually.

Over the past five years, the company has designed, developed, and manufactured “Red Wolf” and “Green Wolf” and has conducted over 40 tests.

“Red Wolf” focuses on long-range precision strikes, while “Green Wolf” specializes in electronic warfare and is equipped with electronic attack, detection, identification, positioning, and reporting capabilities.

Both weapons are highly versatile and come with advanced software for collaborative target reacquisition during flight.

Ed Zoiss, President of L3’s Space and Airborne Systems, said, “Our ‘Wolf Pack’ launch effect provides a significant advantage for all branches of the US military (regardless of platform), enabling them to effectively complete long-range strike chains and counter threats from adversaries in challenging environments, protecting assets.”

“The ‘Red Wolf’ and ‘Green Wolf’ are characterized by their lethality, modularity, cost-effectiveness, and ability to ‘hunt’ at any time,” Zoiss added.

These multi-functional missiles with a range of over 200 nautical miles can target mobile objects such as ships, particularly in the Pacific where range is a crucial factor.
