Astronomical Spectacle! San Francisco Sky Displays “22 Degree Sun Halo”

On October 26, 2024, a magnificent astronomical phenomenon known as the “22 Degree Halo” appeared in the sky over San Francisco in the afternoon. This optical marvel captivated many residents, who stopped to admire and capture the moment.

The “22 Degree Halo” occurs when sunlight is refracted by ice crystals in cirrus clouds at altitudes ranging from 20,000 to 35,000 feet, forming a halo around the sun at a precise angle of 22 degrees, creating a dazzling glow across the sky.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), this phenomenon is not common, but when it does appear, it never fails to surprise and awe people. The NWS explains that halos are colorful spectrums formed by the refraction of light in water droplets or ice crystals. In addition to halos, phenomena like sundogs and sun pillars also stem from similar principles of refraction, each exhibiting its own unique characteristics.

San Francisco resident Lily shared with us that she stumbled upon this spectacle in the city center and found it to be magical and beautiful. She took numerous photos to commemorate the event. Other citizens marveled at this natural beauty, with one expressing, “It’s as if the sky is engaging with us in a special way.”

The San Francisco Bay Area is renowned for its misty fog and rolling hills. Meteorologists encourage residents to look up at the sky frequently, as unexpected astronomical marvels can occur due to changing weather patterns and ideal conditions. So remember to keep an eye on the sky, for you never know when nature’s wonders will unfold before your eyes.
