Simultaneous Earthquakes Hit Two Areas in Chongqing, Residents Report Strong Tremors

On April 14th, earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 and 3.1 occurred in Zizhong County, Neijiang City, and Tongliang District, Chongqing, successively. Some residents in the surrounding areas of Tongliang District, particularly in Bishan District, reported that they felt the tremors very strongly, saying they were “scared so much their legs went weak.”

The China Earthquake Networks Center officially determined that on April 14th at 11:37 in Zizhong County, Neijiang City, Sichuan Province (latitude 29.66 degrees North, longitude 104.85 degrees East), a 3.0 magnitude earthquake occurred at a depth of 7 kilometers.

At 11:53 on April 14th, a 3.1 magnitude earthquake struck Tongliang District in Chongqing (latitude 29.61 degrees North, longitude 106.07 degrees East) with a depth of 8 kilometers.

Taking into account the feedback from netizens in different areas of Chongqing, residents in high-rise buildings in the vicinity of Tongliang, Yongchuan, Bishan, Jiangjin, and other areas reported noticeable tremors. Some netizens mentioned that “doors and windows were shaking” and “beds were trembling.”

Several residents of Bishan posted comments: “The tremor in Bishan was very strong.” “Bishan shook for a few times, and we were all stunned at that moment.” “We felt it in Bishan, very scary.” “I was lying down playing on my phone when it shook a few times, and it scared me.” “Scared so much my legs went weak.”

The average altitude within a 5-kilometer radius of the epicenter is about 332 meters.

According to the China Earthquake Networks Center’s rapid reporting catalog, within a 200-kilometer radius around the epicenter over the past five years, there have been a total of 159 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or above, with the largest earthquake being a 6.0 magnitude quake that struck Lushan County, Guangyuan City, Sichuan on September 16, 2021 (84 kilometers away from the epicenter of this recent earthquake).
