Recent days, a large-scale collapse occurred in the underground garage of the Meidi Era City in the Economic and Technological Development Zone of Shenyang City, Liaoning Province. Residents mentioned that in January this year, they discovered that 6 load-bearing columns in the underground garage had been cut by construction work, but it was not taken seriously.
On the morning of July 14th, several netizens from Liaoning posted videos on social media stating that a large-scale collapse and sinking occurred in the underground garage of the Meidi Era City. Some residents mentioned on social media that they were nearly trapped, expressing concerns about the situation.
Videos from the scene showed a significant collapse of the greenery along with the soil due to the underground collapse, revealing clear damage to the underground garage in the residential area. There were partial collapses and subsidence in the garage, with standing water on the ground, visible signs of significant structural damage to the garage, and vehicles buried under the collapsed soil and facility.
According to reports by “Er San Li Information,” several homeowners were contacted to verify the situation. A homeowner from building 8 mentioned that around 8 a.m. on July 14th, a sudden large-scale collapse occurred in the underground garage between building 8 and building 10. The affected area was substantial, and residents have been temporarily relocated to hotels and are not daring to return home.
One homeowner disclosed, “I noticed in January that 6 load-bearing columns in the underground garage were cut by construction work. When I raised the issue with property management due to the uneven ground, they responded saying there was no problem.”
Another homeowner mentioned that the rain caused flooding in the underground garage, resulting in damage to some vehicles. As of noon on July 15th, many homeowners were still seeking assistance from property management.
Reported by “Huashang News,” on July 15th, an owner from building 8 reported hearing a loud noise before discovering the extensive collapse in the area. Several cars were covered by the collapsed soil.
The collapse area was approximately 2000 square meters. The Meidi Era City residential area has around 3000 households, with the collapse affecting buildings 8 and 10, involving the evacuation of about 80 households.
As of July 15th, there was still standing water in the underground garage, and it was estimated that it would be drained by July 16th. Vehicle losses were still being counted.
Following the incident, public concern and discussion arose. A widely followed social media user expressed disappointment that the warning about the damaged load-bearing columns in January was ignored, leading to the current collapse. They highlighted the lack of responsibility among involved parties and stressed the need to break the cycle of negligence.
Public information shows that the Meidi Era City residential area was developed by Shenyang Jiamei Real Estate Development Co., Ltd., delivered for use in 2020, with a planned total of 2270 households, and property services managed by Shenyang branch of Foshan Midea Property Management Co., Ltd.
Out of five contact numbers listed in “Tianyancha” for the company, four were disconnected, and the one number that connected denied being an employee of the company and promptly hung up the call.
According to “Tianyancha” data, Shenyang Jiamei Real Estate Development Co., Ltd., established in 2016, is an affiliated enterprise of Midea Group, currently listed as in existence with a registered capital of 1 million yuan, but with zero insured staff. The company has accumulated 273 risk information records on “Tianyancha,” with the legal representative associated with 12 other companies and multiple risk records like dishonesty and high consumption restrictions.
On July 13th, during heavy rainfall in Shenyang, a wall collapse incident occurred in the Rongsheng Heyue Mingdi residential area’s underground garage. The collapsed wall created a several-meter-wide gap, with bricks scattered on the ground. A significant amount of garbage behind the wall was exposed.
Videos uploaded by owners at the scene showed a pile of household waste and plastic bags behind the collapsed wall, with some trash flowing onto the garage floor with rainwater.
Reported by “Sanxiang Urban Daily,” after the incident, many residents rushed to the underground garage. Some residents expressed anger and concern, discovering that the underground garage walls were made of hollow bricks and neighboring garbage was buried. It was mentioned that about five years after the handover of the residential area, such severe quality issues in the underground garage raised doubts about the overall engineering quality. Concerns were raised about the possibility of wider collapses if the entire wall was built with hollow bricks, especially during heavy rainfall.
Public records show that the Rongsheng Heyue Mingdi residential area was developed by Shenyang Rongsheng Jinxiu Tiandi Real Estate Development Co., Ltd., completed in 2021, with over fifty buildings.
The property staff at Rongsheng Heyue Mingdi mentioned that the collapsed area was initially a garbage processing station. When the real estate market was active, they planned to build apartments there, but due to a downturn in the real estate market, they decided to bury and level the area with the garbage from before. The collapsed spot was where the entrance of the garbage processing station was sealed with hollow bricks.
After the incident was exposed, on July 14th, the Shenyang Economic Development Zone Construction Bureau issued a statement, directing the development company to urgently repair the damaged wall. However, no further clarification has been provided by the authorities regarding issues such as why hollow bricks were used to seal the wall, if the garbage burial complied with regulations, the design and acceptance of related engineering, and the potential accountability.
It is worth noting that the ground collapse at Meidi Era City and the wall collapse at Rongsheng Heyue Mingdi are two separate incidents, both occurring in the Shenyang Economic Development Zone within just one day of each other, prompting ongoing public concern about residential construction quality, construction supervision, and the ability to respond to heavy rain disasters. Many local residents express worry about their living safety.
