Jiangsu sanitation worker couple hit and killed, 23-year-old woman suspected of drunk driving

On the morning of June 15th, two sanitation workers in Guannan County, Jiangsu Province, China, were hit and killed by a speeding vehicle while they were carrying out cleaning operations. According to the police report, the driver was a 23-year-old woman who was driving under the influence of alcohol and has been criminally detained. Eyewitnesses claimed to have seen a man sitting in the driver’s seat, but a woman in the car insisted that she was the one driving.

A circulated surveillance video showed that at 6:25 am on June 15th, the two sanitation workers were cleaning the roadside while their sanitation vehicle was parked nearby. Suddenly, a speeding vehicle crashed into a van and then hit the workers and the sanitation vehicle, sending them flying. Pictures from the scene depicted the van severely deformed, the front and rear of the offending vehicle damaged, and debris from the sanitation vehicle scattered on the road.

Netizens reported that the incident took place on Guanhe Road in Guannan County, Lianyungang City, Jiangsu Province.

An eyewitness told the local newspaper that on that morning, he was driving on Guanhe Road from east to west. While waiting at a traffic light at an intersection, he heard a loud bang from behind and saw the demolished tricycle of a sanitation worker flying past his right side. He immediately checked his right rearview mirror but couldn’t see the car. Less than two seconds later, the offending vehicle crashed into his car, causing a strong impact from behind. He got out to inspect the damage and found that the rear of his car had been deformed and the rear bumper had popped open.

The witness mentioned that there were three people in the offending vehicle – two women and a man, all young. The man was in the driver’s seat, one woman was in the passenger seat, and another woman was in the back seat. “The man got out and ran away, leaving the woman at the scene. One of the women seemed drunk and confused, claiming she was the one driving.”

In the distance, there was a severely deformed van, and the two sanitation workers hit were about one to two hundred meters away from him. He saw an ambulance arrive first, but it quickly left, and then a hearse came to the scene.
