The announcement of the downfall of Fei Gaoyun, member of the Anhui Provincial Committee of the Chinese Communist Party and Secretary of the Hefei Municipal Committee, who has not been seen in public activities since April 20, was made today (May 6). He had close working connections with several high-ranking CCP officials including Li Qiang, Shi Taifeng, and Wu Zhenglong.
According to a report from CCTV News on Wednesday (May 6), Fei Gaoyun is suspected of “serious violations of discipline and the law,” and is currently undergoing disciplinary review and investigation by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission.
On April 21, 2026, Liang Yanshun, Secretary of the Anhui Provincial Committee of the CCP, conducted a research visit and held a symposium at the Energy Research Institute of the Comprehensive National Science Center in Hefei. Official reports did not mention the presence of Fei Gaoyun, member of the Anhui Provincial Committee and Secretary of the Hefei Municipal Committee.
Reports from official media in Anhui and Hefei indicated that Fei Gaoyun has not been seen participating in public activities since April 20.
On April 24 and 25, multiple accounts on the X platform leaked information that Fei Gaoyun was under investigation. Some sources claimed that Fei Gaoyun was taken away for investigation while attending training at the Central Party School of the CCP. Other claims suggested that Fei Gaoyun encountered trouble and was questioned during a business trip to Beijing, or that his home had been searched.
Public records show that Fei Gaoyun, born in August 1971 in Huai’an, Jiangsu, had long served in Jiangsu and held various positions such as Deputy Mayor, Deputy Secretary of the Municipal Party Committee, Mayor, and Secretary of the Municipal Committee of Yizheng City of the CCP. From July 2011 to February 2013, he held positions including Standing Committee Member of the Nantong Municipal Committee, Secretary of the Tongzhou District Committee, Minister of the Municipal Committee Organization Department, and Secretary of the CCP Qidong Municipal Committee.
In February 2013, Fei Gaoyun shifted to the position of Deputy Secretary of the Changzhou Municipal Committee of the CCP and concurrently Secretary of the Municipal Government Party Leading Group, becoming Mayor in January 2014.
While Li Qiang served as Secretary of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee and Shi Taifeng as Governor of Jiangsu, Fei Gaoyun was promoted to Secretary of the Changzhou Municipal Committee in February 2017.
During Lou Qinjian’s term as Secretary of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee and Wu Zhenglong as Governor of Jiangsu, Fei Gaoyun was appointed Deputy Governor of Jiangsu in January 2018 and worked as Wu Zhenglong’s deputy for three years; in January 2021, he became a Standing Committee Member of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee and Secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Committee. In the middle of this period, on November 15, 2019, Fei Gaoyun received disciplinary action for the major explosion at Jiangsu’s Xiangshui Tianjiayi Chemical Plant on March 21.
While Wu Zhenglong was Secretary of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee and Xu Kunlin was Governor of Jiangsu, Fei Gaoyun ceased to concurrently hold the position of Secretary of the Provincial Political and Legal Affairs Committee in December 2021 and instead served as Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Government Party Organization and Executive Vice Governor.
Following the 20th National Congress of the CCP, Wu Zhenglong was appointed Secretary-General of the State Council and State Councilor, serving as Li Qiang’s chief aide. Meanwhile, in December 2022, Fei Gaoyun was transferred to the position of member of the Anhui Provincial Committee and Executive Vice Governor, and in April 2025, he became Secretary of the CCP Hefei Municipal Committee.
Recent upheavals have been felt in the political arena of Hefei. On November 18, 2025, Lu Jun, Deputy Secretary of the Hefei Municipal Committee under Fei Gaoyun, was also toppled. Prior to Fei Gaoyun, Zhang Hongwen, with a background in the military industry, vanished for several months and was reportedly removed from his position as member of the Anhui Provincial Committee of the CCP and Secretary of the Hefei Municipal Committee in March 2025, with his whereabouts unknown.
