Nationwide Mourning in Poland Over Shooting Incident; Shooter’s Parents and Sister Found Dead at Home

A tragic mass shooting incident occurred in the southern Polish city of Kraków, resulting in the deaths of six individuals and leaving 17 injured. In response to this devastating event, Poland has declared a nationwide period of mourning lasting two days, starting Sunday, November 8th. Grieving citizens have gathered at the site of the attack, laying candles in memory of the victims. Authorities have also discovered the bodies of the shooter’s parents and sister at the family home, raising serious concerns about public safety across the nation.

According to reports, on Sunday, Kraków’s historic Main Market Square and its surrounding streets remained cordoned off by police, who allowed only essential personnel to pass through. Many cafés in the area suspended their operations, and flags on the town hall were flown at half-mast as a show of respect. Numerous candles were lit by the public at various locations within this area, creating a somber atmosphere as people mourned the loss of life.

In a further display of mourning, St. Mary’s Church, located in the central square, suspended its traditional “Hejnał mariacki” trumpet call for 12 hours, starting from 9 PM on Saturday until the same time on Sunday morning. According to the Spokesperson for the Fire Department of Lesser Poland, this interruption of a long-standing tradition is the first of its kind since the outbreak of World War II in 1939.

In the capital city of Warsaw, police have ramped up security measures at popular tourist attractions and crowded areas, erecting protective barriers on some roads leading to the historical center to ensure public safety.

The shooting incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, November 7th, specifically at the historic Main Market Square in Kraków. Police reported that a man drove into the square and opened fire on the crowd from his vehicle. Authorities suggested that the 24-year-old shooter might have been influenced by extreme right-wing ideologies. Fortunately, law enforcement was able to subdue the shooter, who is now hospitalized in critical condition along with two police officers who were among the injured—a total of six people have lost their lives due to this incident, with several others injured.

In a distressing development, police and local officials revealed that three bodies—those of the shooter’s parents and sister—were discovered in a residential home in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, approximately 200 kilometers from Kraków. The authorities shared on their social media platform that they found the deceased, a 53-year-old man and two women aged 52 and 21, in a residential building just before 10 PM on Saturday. Preliminary investigations indicated that the bodies bore gunshot wounds.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed his condolences via social media on Saturday, commending the injured officers, Jakub Kulik and Artur Moranski, for their bravery in responding to the situation, stating, “They put their own safety at risk and likely saved many lives.”

The police reported that the two injured officers are receiving treatment in the hospital, with one in critical condition. An urgent appeal for blood donations has been made for the officer who is currently fighting for his life.

This horrifying incident has intensified public anxiety regarding safety in Poland. A 20-year-old woman named Maria, working at a café in Warsaw, shared her emotional response upon learning about the shooting in Kraków, stating that she “could barely hold back tears.”

She expressed, “A series of recent events, not just this one but other incidents that have occurred lately, have significantly impacted our sense of security.” This sentiment echoes a growing concern among citizens about their safety in the wake of such violent occurrences. The community’s response to the tragedy reflects a collective grief and an urgent need for discussions on security and vigilance in public spaces.
