On November 6th, the original animated series “Monkey King Adventures” from Gan Jing World made its long-awaited debut in Chinese.
Following its successful premiere among Western audiences, the Chinese version of “Monkey King Adventures: The Rise of the King” is set to engage Chinese-speaking viewers. It will air at 8 PM EST on November 6 and 9 AM Taiwan time on November 7, exclusively for Gan Jing members and on the Gan Jing Kids platform.
This marks the first time that the beloved tale is available in Chinese, providing a new opportunity for audiences to experience the saga.
“Monkey King Adventures” is a captivating animation that draws from the classic Chinese novel “Journey to the West.” This multi-season fantastical adventure showcases a vividly animated saga presented in 3D CG format.
Originally written in the 16th century, “Journey to the West” chronicles the legendary pilgrimage of a monk over 1,300 years ago, a story familiar to countless families across Asia for generations. Now, the iconic character of the Monkey King, who has enchanted numerous children, will tell his tale from stone monkey to the mighty king in his own language.
The narrative follows the journey of Sun Wukong, who was born from a mystical stone. Viewers will witness how he grows from a rebellious figure into a wise king through various trials and tribulations. He undergoes rigorous training, causes chaos in the Dragon Palace, erases his name from the Book of Life and Death, and receives an invitation from the Jade Emperor to take a position in heaven. Along the way, he learns powerful skills, battles demons and gods, and matures through his experiences. Eventually, he earns the title of “The Great Sage Equal to Heaven” and faces the challenges of an uninvited peach feast as well as a significant test from Buddha.
The series aims to honor the original story and its essence while infusing humor and adventure, making it accessible and enjoyable for children of diverse cultural backgrounds. For parents, Sun Wukong’s exploits and reflections provide ideal moments to discuss humility, responsibility, and character development with their children.
Sherry Yin, the CEO of Gan Jing World and the executive producer of the series, shared insights, stating, “Monkey King Adventures creates a grand and expansive animated universe over multiple seasons, rich with numerous characters and endless adventures. Through his 81 trials, the Monkey King learns that true strength comes from wisdom, perseverance, and self-cultivation. His greatest achievements lie not in battling heaven and earth but in becoming a better version of himself along the way.”
Taiwanese director Lu Hsueh-Chin elaborated, “Our goal in producing Monkey King Adventures is to rekindle a love for this cherished story among children around the world. The Monkey King, who is boastful and often seeks to show off, sometimes goes unnoticed in his silent efforts and shies away from admitting his mistakes—these are familiar feelings for children. However, beneath his prowess lies a little monkey who values loyalty: he’s patient with an old horse that no one cares for and will go to great lengths to rescue a fellow monkey in danger.”
He added, “We aim to pass down the essence of Journey to the West to a new generation, allowing both parents and children to embark on this journey together, leading to endless discussions afterward. We hope that through the Monkey King’s adventures, children will grasp the inherent goodness, humility, and inner growth depicted in the story.”
Following its English debut on October 2, “Monkey King Adventures” caught the attention of the animation industry. Leading animation media, Animation World Network (AWN), published a feature on October 5, introducing the story, the creative team, and the official trailer to the global animation community. Spanish media ReporteAsia reported on the premiere day, bringing the Monkey King’s tale to Latin American and Spanish audiences.
An audience member who grew up listening to Monkey King stories commented, “Finally, someone has captured the essence of the Monkey King accurately.”
In the English version’s comment section, viewers eagerly inquired, “When will the Chinese version be released?” With the launch of the Chinese version, Chinese families can now relive this cherished childhood story in their own language.
The Chinese version premiered on November 6 at 8 PM EST and November 7 at 9 AM Taiwan time. The first season consists of 12 episodes, approximately 10 minutes each, with the first two episodes available for free viewing. The remaining episodes are accessible to Gan Jing members.
There are two membership options: Basic and Gold, both of which include full access to Gan Jing Kids contents that allow children to learn and view content in a secure “child mode.” The Gold membership also provides an ad-free viewing experience across all platforms of Gan Jing World.
