Amid continued clashes between the United States and Iran, the deployment of US elite paratroopers, the 82nd Airborne Division, in the Middle East has been extended to 2027. The 82nd Airborne Division is the oldest and most iconic elite paratrooper and rapid response unit in the US Army.
According to reports from US media outlets such as CBS News and Fox News, the leadership of the 82nd Airborne Division sent a letter to soldiers’ families marking the date as August 30th. Families were informed that the deployment period of soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division deployed to the Middle East earlier this year has been extended to 2027. This letter has been confirmed by US officials.
“We did not make this decision lightly, and we are deeply aware that a longer deployment will bring a heavy burden to every family, including our own,” the letter said.
Approximately 2,000 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division were first deployed to the Middle East in March this year following the US military action against Iran. The letter stated that this deployment would last for a maximum of 12 months.
The letter explained that the extension of the deployment is due to “operational demands”. The headquarters of the 82nd Airborne Division, artillery units, logistical support brigade, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 3rd Battalion, and 307th Engineer Battalion will be deployed in the Middle East for a full year; while the deployment period for the paratrooper units and the combat aviation brigade of the division will be up to one year.
The extension of deployments has become more common after the outbreak of the Iran war. The US Navy has extended the deployment period of several ships. For example, sailors on the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier set a record for the longest deployment since the Vietnam War, returning to Norfolk, Virginia, in May after a 326-day deployment.
