In a family home in Colorado Springs, USA, a black bear was found entering the kitchen in the early hours of a hot morning in July.
According to a report by Fox News on Monday, August 31, surveillance footage from the family’s home showed that on July 21, the bear entered the house through an open back door. The back door had been left open for ventilation at the time.
The surveillance footage revealed that once inside the kitchen, the bear helped itself to some snacks and even ate some Flintstones vitamins left on the table. It then dragged a trash can outside and began rummaging through the garbage near the kitchen door.
The homeowner, Nerissa England, told media outlet Storyful, “I was getting ready to leave in the morning when suddenly I heard a loud noise. I asked my children (ages 8, 6, and 3), ‘Are you all okay?’ They were all upstairs playing.”
England recalled, “At first, I thought maybe a picture had fallen off the wall. My 8-year-old daughter, Zara Lee, was curious and went downstairs to investigate, and my husband followed downstairs to make coffee. When Zara turned the corner into the kitchen, she found a bear outside the kitchen door eating garbage.”
Zara and her father opened the door and made noise, successfully scaring off the bear. England said, “We will temporarily keep the big door closed until the local bears are full and ready to hibernate for the winter!”
In recent years, due to the impact of drought affecting natural food sources of bears like plants, berries, and nuts, there has been an increase in cases of bears breaking into homes in various parts of the US. Wildlife officials in Colorado also pointed out that bear activity this year has reached record levels. Their sense of smell guides them to places where human food is available.
