On December 26, a man in Guizhou was sentenced to death for poisoning his two underage children.
According to a report from the Zunyi Intermediate People’s Court in Guizhou Province on their official WeChat account on the 26th, Liu Zhongjie failed to handle the emotional disputes with his wife properly. He deceived his two underage children to drink the pesticide “DDT” and then did not take any rescue measures, resulting in the death of the two children (aged 10 and 7). The court sentenced Liu Zhongjie to death for the crime of intentional homicide on the same day.
The mother of the children, Ms. Huang, choked up as she told Extreme News that Liu Zhongjie paid the price for his actions, “but even if he dies, he cannot bring back the lives of the two children. The children were still very young when they passed away, they had not yet enjoyed life.”
Reportedly, Ms. Huang married Liu Zhongjie in 2014, and thereafter Liu Zhongjie was often unemployed, frequently gambling at internet cafes, and even needed financial assistance from his parents for daily expenses. Because of this, the couple often quarreled, and Ms. Huang was also subjected to domestic violence.
Due to escalating conflicts between the couple, Ms. Huang filed for divorce. Both parties submitted divorce registration applications to the Civil Affairs Bureau on May 20 this year, entering a 30-day cooling-off period. However, the next day, Liu Zhongjie immediately regretted it, tied up Ms. Huang’s hands with a rope, took out the pesticide, and threatened to end their lives together. To appease his emotions, Ms. Huang promised to “give up the divorce,” but then escaped when the opportunity arose and reported the incident.
In the early hours of May 22, Liu Zhongjie sent a “farewell letter” in the family group chat, claiming that he drank pesticide and forwarded the letter to Ms. Huang’s brother, Mr. Huang, asking him to tell Ms. Huang to “collect the children’s bodies for them.”
Mr. Huang quickly contacted his sister and both families. Over an hour later, Liu Zhongjie’s father called to inform them that the two children had passed away.
According to Ms. Huang, Liu Zhongjie bought a total of 4 bottles of DDT, deceiving the children into believing that by drinking it (the pesticide), they could find their mother. Based on the forensic report, Ms. Huang’s son and daughter died at 3:40 and 3:38 on the early morning of the 22nd.
