Watching streaming services, the last thing one wants is for ads to interrupt a climactic moment. Many people prefer to spend a few extra dollars each month to upgrade to an ad-free plan. But is it worth the money?
According to data from the U.S. financial website Money Talks News on September 21st, taking into account the prices listed on various platforms’ official websites, statistics from research company Ampere Analysis, and ad duration disclosed by Business Insider, a comparison was made: how much more money it costs to upgrade to an ad-free plan for every hour of ads skipped. The results varied significantly – Netflix costs around $13.53, while Paramount+ is only about $1.66.
Based on U.S. subscription packages and assuming 20 hours of content consumed per platform per month, the cost per hour can fluctuate depending on the viewing habits.
For Netflix, the ad-supported plan costs $8.99 per month, while the ad-free standard plan costs $19.99, a difference of $11, totaling $132 per year.
Netflix’s ad volume is relatively low. Data from August this year indicated an average of only 2.44 minutes of ads per hour. With 20 hours of content watched monthly, approximately 9.8 hours of ads are skipped in a year. Spending $132 to skip these 9.8 hours equates to paying $13.53 per hour saved.
On the other hand, Paramount+ paints a different picture. Its ad-supported Essential plan costs $8.99 per month, while the ad-free Premium plan costs $13.99, a $5 difference amounting to an extra $60 per year. The platform averages 9.01 minutes of ads per hour, allowing for approximately 36 hours of ads saved in a year.
Dividing the $60 by 36 hours, the cost per hour saved amounts to just $1.66, a stark contrast to Netflix.
It’s important to note that the $5 price difference for Paramount+ is not solely for the “ad-free” option; the Premium plan includes other perks. Additionally, the ad-free feature primarily applies to on-demand content, as live programming may still feature ads.
The costs of other platforms fall in between the two. Hulu’s ad-supported plan is $11.99 per month, whereas the ad-free plan is $18.99, a $7 difference. With an average of 8.23 minutes of ads per hour, skipping an hour of ads costs an additional $2.55. It’s worth mentioning that Hulu’s ad-free plan has exceptions for certain titles.
Disney+ offers an ad-supported plan at $11.99 per month and an ad-free Premium plan at $18.99, also a $7 difference. With an average of 7.54 minutes of ads per hour, the cost per hour is $2.79.
Compared to the four platforms, Netflix’s ad-free cost stands out as significantly higher:
– Paramount+: $1.66 per hour
– Hulu: $2.55 per hour
– Disney+: $2.79 per hour
– Netflix: $13.53 per hour
Why does Netflix come at such a high cost per hour? It’s precisely because of its minimal ads.
With only 2.44 minutes of ads per hour on average, the tolerance for ads is already low; yet, upgrading to an ad-free plan requires an additional $11 per month. The exchange between time saved and added cost naturally inflates the cost per hour.
However, the $13.53 hourly rate for Netflix’s ad-free plan doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not cost-effective. The calculations are based on the assumption of consuming 20 hours of content per month. The more one watches, the more ad time is saved, reducing the cost per hour. Conversely, occasional viewers may not save as much time, resulting in a higher cost per hour.
Moreover, even Netflix’s ad-supported plans are evolving. Ampere data shows that average ad time per hour increased from 1.40 minutes in January to 2.44 minutes in August, a 74% increase, the largest among the platforms surveyed. In March this year, the ad-supported plan’s price also rose by $1.
Therefore, the choice in plans shouldn’t only focus on the additional monthly cost. For those who dislike ads and watch content frequently, spending the extra money for a seamless experience may be worthwhile. On the other hand, for those indifferent to commercials or occasional viewers, the ad-supported plans are often more budget-friendly.
Ultimately, the comparison reflects not just the cost of ads but also the value of time: how much are you willing to spend to buy back an hour of your time?
