Democratic federal Congressman Marcy Kaptur’s office released a statement on Sunday (August 2) morning, stating that Kaptur was involved in a car accident near Toledo, Ohio and has been taken to the hospital.
Today morning, Congressman Kaptur was on her way to the church for a worship service when the car she was traveling in was hit. Her office stated that she is currently conscious and receiving treatment, with no life-threatening injuries.
Officials mentioned that the accident is still under investigation.
“We look forward to Toledo police providing more information during the investigation of the accident,” her office stated.
According to CBS reports, Toledo police stated that before 11 a.m. local time on Sunday, officers received a call about a hit-and-run accident near Detroit Avenue and Central Avenue. Police mentioned that two individuals, including Kaptur, were taken to the hospital.
An eyewitness informed the affiliated television station WTOL 11 of Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) that the other driver was picked up by another vehicle shortly after the accident and fled the scene.
Authorities have not disclosed further details of the accident. Toledo police stated in a release, “Traffic accident investigators have rushed to the scene, and the investigation is still ongoing.”
At 80 years old, Marcy Kaptur is the longest-serving female member of the U.S. House of Representatives and also holds the record for the longest-serving female in Congressional history. Since 1983, she has been representing Ohio’s 9th Congressional District.
