A classic work of Chinese literature, “Journey to the West,” has captivated audiences for over 400 years. The tale is not solely about the defeat of demons and monsters; it represents a profound journey filled with trials and self-improvement towards goodness. On November 6th, the first original animation by Gan Jing World, titled “The Adventures of the Monkey King,” will premiere its Chinese dubbed version, subtitled “The Adventures of the Monkey King: The Legend of the Great Sage Equal to Heaven.”
Having garnered enthusiastic acclaim from Western audiences, Gan Jing World’s original animation “The Adventures of the Monkey King” is now poised to reach Chinese-speaking viewers. The Chinese dubbed version will debut on November 6th, 8 PM Eastern Time and November 7th, 9 AM Taiwan Time, on Gan Jing World streaming platform (GJW+) and Gan Jing Kids, a subsidiary of Gan Jing World.
Directed and scripted by Jian Lun Lu from Taiwan, the series also features Tran Van Tien and Pham Van Huy as co-directors, with Terry Wu serving as the producer. The Chief Executive Officer of Gan Jing World, Sherry Yin, takes on the role of executive producer.
Sherry Yin expressed her excitement, stating, “The Adventures of the Monkey King has constructed a grand, multi-season animation universe filled with hundreds of characters and endless adventures. After enduring 81 tribulations, the Monkey King realizes that true strength comes from wisdom, perseverance, and personal growth. His greatest achievement is not merely vanquishing foes, but in learning to become a better version of himself along the way.”
The series employs 3D CGI animation to depict the origins of the Stone Monkey Sun Wukong, who learns from a master, causes havoc in the Dragon King’s palace, removes his name from the Book of Death, and eventually ascends to heaven upon the invitation of the Jade Emperor, gradually rising to the status of the Monkey King. The production team pays homage to the original story and its themes, retelling the adventures with humor and fantasy elements, ensuring that children from diverse cultural backgrounds can understand and learn from it.
Regarding the creative inspiration, Jian Lun Lu remarked, “In producing The Adventures of the Monkey King, we aim to rekindle a love for this cherished story among children around the world. Wukong’s inclination to show off and his hidden struggles of working hard without recognition, as well as his reluctance to admit wrongdoing, are emotions that resonate with children. Yet, beneath his prowess, he is a loyal little monkey who patiently accompanies an ignored old horse and bravely fights to save a fellow monkey in distress.”
He further added, “We hope to pass on the tale of ‘Journey to the West’ to a new generation, allowing both adults and children to embark on this journey together, fostering endless conversations after watching. We desire for children to grasp the kindness, humility, and inner elevation that ‘Journey to the West’ encapsulates through the Monkey King’s adventures.”
Producer Terry Wu remarked, “Sun Wukong is not a flawless hero; his greatest challenge is not the conquest of demons but rather the journey of self-improvement. Through his trials, this mischievous Stone Monkey gains wisdom and moves closer to enlightenment.”
The first season comprises 12 episodes, each around 10 minutes long. The first two episodes will be available for free, while the remaining episodes will be accessible to Gan Jing World members. Membership options include a basic plan and a gold plan, both of which provide access to the complete content of Gan Jing Kids.
