At least 15 officials have been investigated in Guangxi in May 2026. Among them, Deng Guofu, former Secretary of the Party Committee and President of Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences, was placed under investigation on May 30, 2026. Deng, an expert in hybrid rice breeding, has been twice selected as a candidate for the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
According to the official website of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission of the Communist Party of China, as reported by the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Discipline Inspection Commission, Deng Guofu is suspected of serious violations of discipline and law and is currently under investigation. On January 30, 2026, Deng resigned from his position as a member of the Guangxi Autonomous Region People’s Political Consultative Conference.
Deng Guofu, born in July 1965 in Guangxi, Guanyang, graduated from Guangxi Agricultural College in 1986 with a major in agriculture. He obtained a master’s degree in crop genetics and breeding from South China Agricultural University in 1993 and a Ph.D. in crop cultivation and farming from Guangxi University in 2007.
Deng started working at the Rice Research Institute of Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences in July 1986 and has held positions such as Deputy Director of the research office, Assistant Researcher, Deputy Director of the Institute, Associate Researcher, Director of the Institute, and Researcher. From December 2005 to April 2017, he served as a member of the Party Committee, Vice President, and Researcher at Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences. From May 2017 to November 2025, he held the position of Secretary of the Party Committee and President of Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences (ministerial level).
Deng Guofu has also served as Vice Chairman of the Guangxi Association of Science and Technology, Consultant of the Autonomous Region Government, Vice Chairman of the Rice Industry Branch of the China Crop Science Society, Chief Scientist of the Guangxi Rice Innovation Team within the National Agricultural Industry Technology System, and Vice Chairman of the Ninth Committee of the Guangxi Association for Science and Technology in 2024.
Throughout his career, Deng has been actively involved in hybrid rice breeding research and has led the development of super rice varieties such as Guiliangyou 2 and Teyou 582. He was selected as a candidate for the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2021 and 2023.
The crackdown on corruption in Guangxi has also led to the downfall of other officials. Since May 16, 2025, when the former Chairman of the Guangxi Autonomous Region Government, Lantianli, was investigated, the region has been witnessing a continuous cleansing of its officialdom.
According to the official website of the Guangxi Autonomous Region Discipline Inspection Commission, in May 2026, a total of 15 officials in Guangxi have been investigated. Apart from Deng Guofu, other officials who have been investigated include:

– Kong Bin, Secretary of the Party Committee and Director of the Market Supervision Administration of Wuzhou City (May 19, 2026);
– Yang Kun, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Deputy Director of the People’s Congress of Gangbei District, Guigang City (May 18, 2026);
– Chen Zhanya, former Deputy Director of the People’s Congress of Cenxi City (May 13, 2026);
– Xie Jiang, Deputy Secretary and General Manager of the Party Committee of Nanning Transportation Investment Group Co., Ltd. (May 12, 2026);
