Recently in Yueyang, a motorcycle traveling at over 120 kilometers per hour struck down three pedestrians on a zebra crossing, resulting in the deaths of two people and injuries to two others, including the perpetrator.
The traffic accident occurred around 8:55 pm on May 4th during the May Day holiday. The incident took place at a pedestrian crossing on Yueyang Avenue in Yueyang City, approximately 150 meters from the Jinyunshan Tunnel.
According to reports from The Paper, Ms. Yao, a relative of the victims, recounted that around 8 pm on May 4th, her mother, stepfather, and a couple of friends had finished dinner and were taking a walk near Yueyang Avenue. As they crossed the road along the zebra crossing, a speeding motorcycle crashed into them.
Ms. Yao saw from the surveillance video footage that just as Mr. Fan, who was walking in front, was almost at the middle barrier of the road, a motorcycle passed swiftly behind him. The other three individuals a few steps behind stopped as the motorcycle passed, but as they resumed walking, another motorcycle quickly approached and instantly knocked them down.
“After being knocked to the ground, my mother could still move, but Aunt Tian couldn’t. My stepfather, who is relatively thin, was thrown quite far from the impact,” Ms. Yao said. Following the incident, she measured the distance from the zebra crossing to where her stepfather fell and found that “he was thrown approximately 30 meters.”
Ms. Yao revealed that her stepfather died at the scene, Aunt Tian succumbed to her injuries in the ambulance en route to the hospital, and her mother suffered multiple fractures in her ribs, chest vertebrae, ankle, as well as injuries to her lungs, spleen, and other organs. She has now been stabilized after receiving medical treatment and is out of danger.
The tragic traffic accident resulted in the deaths of two people and injuries to two others, including the perpetrator, Mr. Wang, a 26-year-old male.
On May 6th, a Judicial Appraisal Report showed that Wang’s motorcycle was traveling at a speed of approximately 122km/h to 127km/h half a second before the collision. However, the traffic signs on that road segment indicated a speed limit of 50 kilometers per hour.
Furthermore, surveillance footage revealed that at the time of the accident, a total of seven motorcycles passed through the zebra crossing where the incident occurred. After the first motorcycle raced past, the second hit the victims, and the following five motorcycles stopped at the side of the road.
Following the incident, Wang was criminally detained by the local public security authorities for suspicion of committing a crime, and the other accompanying drivers were also dealt with.
On May 8th, Ms. Yao stated that after this case is transferred for prosecution, the victims’ side plans to bring criminal and civil lawsuits.
