Guangdong Man Nearly Dies from Stroke After Drinking Cola Instead of Water for Years

A 55-year-old man from Guangdong has been diagnosed with acute cerebral infarction after years of unhealthy lifestyle choices, including a daily consumption of at least four cans of cola and long-term smoking. He also suffers from diabetes, high blood pressure, and high blood lipid levels.

In early October, the man, referred to as Mr. Sheng (a pseudonym), returned to his hometown in Qingyuan to celebrate his mother’s birthday. Upon arrival, relatives noticed that his complexion appeared unusual and immediately took his blood pressure using a meter. The reading was alarmingly high, measuring at 220/120 mmHg.

Over the following two hours, family members checked his blood pressure multiple times, and it consistently registered at elevated levels. Nonetheless, Mr. Sheng felt that he was physically fine and did not perceive any immediate health concerns.

Concerned for his well-being, his family took him to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. Due to the severity of his condition, he was quickly transferred to Guangdong Sanjiu Brain Hospital for specialized care. Upon examination, doctors noted that he was having difficulty speaking and was unsteady on his feet. Additional tests revealed a fasting blood sugar level of 23 millimoles per liter, and an MRI scan confirmed the presence of acute cerebral infarction.

As of the latest reports, Mr. Sheng has received medical treatment and has since been discharged from the hospital.

Reflecting on his lifestyle, Mr. Sheng shared that he had worked as a resident singer in his youth, and his habit of drinking cola has persisted for two to three decades. He stated, “Whenever I see cola, I feel compelled to drink it.”

In his daily routine, Mr. Sheng hardly consumes plain water. In addition to his minimum of four cans of cola each day, he enjoys sweet foods and smokes over a pack of cigarettes daily, all without paying much attention to his blood pressure or blood sugar levels.

Dr. Zhong Shuisheng, head of the Neurology Department at Guangdong Sanjiu Brain Hospital, categorized Mr. Sheng as a typical case of metabolic syndrome, where the body exhibits multiple metabolic abnormalities simultaneously. These combined issues can accelerate the process of atherosclerosis, damaging blood vessel walls and significantly increasing the risk of stroke.

This case serves as a sobering reminder of the impact of poor dietary habits and lifestyle choices on long-term health, particularly concerning conditions that can lead to life-threatening complications. It emphasizes the importance of regular health check-ups and a balanced lifestyle to mitigate risks associated with metabolic syndrome and other chronic diseases.
