Explosion in Wuhan Residential Area at Midnight Results in 2 Dead and 1 Injured; Delivery Worker Suspected of Being Lured to the Scene

On the night of November 2nd, a significant explosion occurred in a residential community located in the Wuchang District of Wuhan, Hubei province. Reports circulating on social media suggest that explosions were reported in three different residential areas. Allegedly, this incident may have involved a scheme where takeaway delivery workers were lured to a residential building under the guise of delivery orders, which subsequently resulted in the explosion. Local residents have indicated that the areas of Kaide 1818 and Zhongnan International City experienced explosions. However, official sources have reported that only one community was affected, resulting in two fatalities and one injury.

Following the disaster, the news quickly spread across international social media platforms, with discussions focusing heavily on the probable motives behind the explosions, suggesting that the incident was an act of societal retaliation. Eyewitness accounts detail how dozens of takeaway workers were summoned to the same location using multiple orders from a popular food delivery service. Some of these workers sensed that something was amiss and attempted to escape by kicking down the door just moments before the explosion occurred.

An anonymous individual shared on social media, “Someone on the 28th floor has retaliated against society by ordering numerous delivery workers. They summoned several delivery personnel inside, ignited gas, and then there was a tremendous explosion. I’ve never heard such a loud bang before… One individual managed to escape but was severely burned. I could even smell the charred scent on them… The police were present, but we were not allowed to take photos.”

According to various reports, explosions were reported in three distinct communities; however, the total number of incidents remains uncertain.

As the events unfolded, a woman named Mrs. Wang revealed that media coverage of the incidents had dwindled, with numerous posts being deleted or censored. She testified that friends within the community had been contacted by police, urging them to delete their accounts. “I dared not speak about this on Xiaohongshu; my friend has already received calls from the police requesting the removal of her posts.”

Mrs. Wang also recounted her conversation with a delivery worker who witnessed the explosion firsthand, stating, “He said there were absolutely premeditated intentions behind these actions.” The worker had been in the vicinity of the famous Huanghelou when he received an order directed at Kaide 1818. The order claimed to request personnel for a safety training session, asking delivery personnel to attend with the promise of adequate compensation, which made the task more appealing than a typical delivery job.

Upon arrival at the location, the delivery personnel noticed that the individual they were supposed to meet never showed up and were asked to organize themselves for the photos. Suddenly, they detected the smell of smoke and attempted to leave, but the door wouldn’t budge. Eventually, one person managed to force the door open, allowing everyone to flee.

Mrs. Wang recounted that all fourteen delivery workers that were present escaped the scene, and within approximately thirty seconds of their departure, an explosion occurred. One rider sustained minor injuries while another was more severely injured and had to be taken to the intensive care unit.

She further explained, “The delivery worker I spoke with told me he was tricked into entering. There was also a similar scheme at Zhongnan International City, where he received an order but felt something was off and managed to run away. He was unfortunate not to have escaped from Kaide 1818.”

Mrs. Wang’s sister, who lives near Kaide 1818, was awakened by the tremendous explosion. She initially thought it was thunder. “She was asleep and heard a noise, thinking a storm was coming, and suddenly her roommate shouted that there was a fire. She hurried to dress and rushed downstairs with her phone.”

Worried for her sister’s safety, Mrs. Wang continued to call, ensuring her sister’s building had not suffered major damage. “I felt like a loved one had faced death so close—it was genuinely terrifying. My younger sister and cousin live very near to the explosion site, in the adjacent building; it is frightening,” she said.

Another local resident, Mrs. Li, recalled that moment vividly, saying the explosion jolted her awake from a deep sleep. Upon visiting the vicinity of Kaide 1818 for a look, she noted that firefighters were already present but rescue operations faced challenges due to apparent elevator malfunctions and blocked building entrances. “I went to another side to look, but didn’t have a view because that was the middle section; glass was strewn all over the streets.”

Kaide 1818 is part of a larger commercial complex that includes residential and office buildings located on Zhongbei Road in Wuchang District of Wuhan. Mrs. Wang also mentioned that the delivery worker she spoke to claimed there were no fatalities at Kaide 1818, but communication about the situation at Zhongnan International City was severely suppressed, with police also warning him against spreading information.

Mr. Liu, who lives near Chuhehan Street and has previously worked as a delivery rider, stated, “I’m very close to Kaide 1818. The fatalities occurred at Zhongnan International City, while all the delivery personnel at Kaide 1818 managed to escape.”

At the time of the explosion, Mr. Liu was engaged in other activities and only learned about the situation later through numerous groups of delivery riders and friends. He noted the significant network among delivery personnel, which allows for rapid information spread, although several discussions and chat groups have since been dissolved due to police intervention. “Basically, all were shut down, and some even hesitate to speak up. The police had called and asked for them to disband groups.”

According to reports, two elevators at Kaide 1818 may have been damaged due to the explosion, and on November 3rd, friends attempted to deliver to the area and had to take the stairs. There are mixed opinions regarding the cause of the incident, with many speculating that it might be an act of societal vengeance.

Regarding rumors of explosions in multiple locations, Mrs. Li has also heard that there were reports of explosions in more than one place. She elaborated that there might have been a fire caused by an electric vehicle in her community, but confirmation remains unclear.

Later that day, the Wuchang District branch of the Wuhan Municipal Public Security Bureau confirmed that an explosion had occurred at approximately 11:50 PM on November 2nd in one of the communities, resulting in two deaths and one serious injury (the latter not life-threatening). Various departments, including public security and emergency services, responded swiftly to the incident for rescue and investigation work. Currently, efforts to investigate and manage the situation are ongoing.
