In a perplexing turn of events, a man from Hubei, China, found himself at the center of a legal battle following the misplacement of a lottery ticket worth an astonishing 11.13 million yuan. Having spent just 32 yuan on this ticket, he had hoped to claim his life-changing prize, but the failure to locate the ticket in time led to tragic consequences.
The story began in November 2019 when the man, identified only by his surname, Huang, purchased a “Double Color Ball” lottery ticket from a local retail outlet in Hubei. His gamble paid off handsomely when he won the grand prize, a staggering 11.13 million yuan. However, soon after his life-altering win, the ticket went missing.
It wasn’t until January 2020 that Huang unexpectedly discovered the lost ticket. Recognizing the urgency of his situation, he approached the lottery retailer for a formal statement to confirm his purchase and the winnings associated with the ticket. Armed with this proof, he proceeded to the lottery center to claim his prize.
To his dismay, the lottery center rejected his claim. They cited the stipulation that winners must redeem their prizes within sixty calendar days from the date of the draw, and his redemption attempt came two days after the deadline had passed.
Huang contended that the ticket itself did not explicitly state any 60-day redemption period, and he argued that the lottery center failed to sufficiently inform him about the necessary timelines for claiming his winnings. Consequently, he turned to the Wuhan East Lake High-tech Zone Court and initiated a lawsuit against the lottery center, demanding the full prize amount along with compensation for the losses incurred due to the delay in collecting his winnings.
The lottery center, however, stood firm in their position. They reiterated that the rules were publicly accessible on their official website, detailing that claimants must redeem their winnings within sixty days of the draw; beyond this period, winners would effectively forfeit their prizes. They also noted that they had made several efforts to reach out and locate the winners via announcements on platforms like “Today’s Headlines.”
Seeking clarity, the court reviewed the documentation and evidence. It confirmed that the lottery draw announcement and related details, including the deadline for claiming prizes, were readily available on the official lottery website. Furthermore, they documented that Huang had contacted customer service soon after finding his ticket, expressing his knowledge of the substantial prize but indicating that he was two days past the deadline for redemption.
The court ultimately ruled that Huang’s failure to claim his winnings within the stipulated timeframe was a result of his own negligence in misplacing the ticket. It concluded that the lottery center had not breached any contract, leading to the dismissal of his claims in their entirety.
Following the court’s verdict, Huang expressed his decision not to pursue an appeal and proceeded to pay over 88,000 yuan in court fees, marking a definitive end to his attempt to claim the lost fortune.
This case highlights the importance of being aware of the rules and regulations surrounding lottery claims and serves as a cautionary tale for all lottery participants about the potential consequences of misplacing such valuable tickets.
