On July 30, murder suspect Xia Fugang escaped in Henan’s Xiping County, prompting a massive police operation that culminated in his arrest today, August 8. According to the special task force briefing on the “7.30” case in Zhangma Town, a suburb of Xuzhou City, Xia Putai had rented a property in the Houyuan community of Baicheng Street in Xiping County where a confrontation with his neighbor Hou Lilie over trivial matters led to a fatal stabbing incident on July 30. He also injured multiple people while on the run. Xia Fugang was apprehended at around 4 p.m. on August 8 in Guozhen, Yuanhui District of Luohe City.
On August 8 afternoon, reporters from the Huashang Daily News learned that Xia Fugang was discovered in a cornfield in Daliu Town, several kilometers away from Xiping County.
A villager from Tandian Township, Dong Li, recounted to Da Ji Yuan, “I saw that night, the perpetrator ran into the cornfield. The drone spotted him but ran out of battery before taking off again. The whole area was surrounded by a thousand people, he couldn’t escape with all the monitoring in place.”
On August 2, the official announcement from Xiping County through “Xiping Integrated Media” stated that a significant criminal case occurred on July 30 in Baicheng Town, Xiping County, Henan Province. The suspect, Xia Fugang, a 51-year-old Han Chinese, hailing from Jiangzhuang Village, Tandian Township, Xiping County, was described with specific clothing details during his escape.
The police report indicated that Xia Fugang got into a dispute with his neighbor Hou Lilie over trivial matters, resulting in a fatal stabbing. While Hou Lilie tragically succumbed to his injuries, his relatives are in stable condition. The suspect remains at large, potentially armed with dangerous weapons, posing a high risk. A maximum reward of 50,000 yuan was set for information leading to his capture.
Local authorities have been conducting extensive searches and arrests in the area for several days, including combing through cornfields and irrigation canals.

However, local villagers speaking to Da Ji Yuan revealed a different perspective. They claimed that Xia Fugang, a construction worker, was involved in a construction dispute with a neighbor of the family he was working for, rather than a direct conflict with the ‘village bully’ as some versions suggested.
One account circulating online suggested that Xia Fugang’s father, known for scavenging to make a living, faced malicious oppression and bullying from a local ‘village bully’, leading to the tragic events. Amid a lack of assistance from authorities despite seeking it repeatedly, the desperate circumstances allegedly pushed Xia Fugang to commit the crime.
Nevertheless, a villager clarified to Da Ji Yuan that the incidents were not directly connected to the so-called ‘village bully.’ Xia Fugang’s father was actually killed by the ‘village bully’ years before, and Xia himself turned violent after being attacked by neighbors.
Yang Lan, a villager from Tandian Township, shared with the reporters that Xia Fugang’s father was a contractor who had a dispute with a ‘village bully’ and was killed by him years ago. Xia Fugang was working in construction for a family in the city when the neighbors took issue with the noise, leading to a physical confrontation and subsequent tragic events.
Yang Lan emphasized that the recent events were separate from the historical incident involving Xia Fugang’s father, emphasizing the complexity of the situation.
A local female villager, Meihua, echoed similar sentiments, stating that the suspect’s father was involved in a business dispute years ago, leading to his demise. The lack of justice for their family reportedly prompted the current situation.
The sympathy shown towards the escapee by numerous locals, despite the extensive police chase and high reward for his capture, signals a complex and emotional reaction within the community.
China expert Li Linyi explained to Da Ji Yuan that the sympathy shown by Chinese villagers and netizens towards a murderer is not baseless, suggesting that the perpetrator might have been oppressed by influential figures similar to the high-profile case of Xia Junfeng in 2009. Additionally, distrust towards the CCP (Chinese Communist Party), especially law enforcement, has led to a shift in how people perceive such incidents.
