Los Angeles Mayor Runoff Vote: Bass and Rahman in Close Race

The mayoral election in Los Angeles, a significant metropolis in the United States, has captured widespread attention. Current Mayor Karen Bass is facing off against City Councilmember Nithya Raman from District 4. As the preliminary results came in on the evening of November 3, it became clear that the race between Bass and Raman was incredibly close.

According to data released by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder’s office around 10 PM on Tuesday, Bass, who is seeking re-election, garnered 50.78% of the votes, while challenger Raman secured 49.22% of the votes.

In the lead-up to the election, both candidates engaged in an intensely competitive campaign marked by fluctuating poll numbers. Raman had previously held a significant lead, surpassing Bass by 11 percentage points in a September poll and consistently outpacing her in various prediction markets. However, a dramatic turn of events occurred in October, where Bass’s support surged, allowing her to equalize with challenger Raman.

Both Bass and Raman are members of the Democratic Party, yet they represent distinct ideological factions within it, reflecting a broader clash between establishment and progressive wings of the party.

Bass is often characterized as part of the Democratic establishment. She made history in 2022 by becoming the first woman to hold the office of mayor in Los Angeles. During her tenure, she has prioritized addressing the homelessness crisis, improving public safety, and alleviating the housing shortage. Nevertheless, some voters have criticized her response to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles that occurred in 2025, questioning her preparedness and management in the face of natural disasters.

On the other hand, Raman’s campaign is deemed significantly more left-leaning. She places a strong emphasis on housing and homelessness issues, advocating for tenant rights and progressive housing policies. Elected to the Los Angeles City Council in 2020, Raman received backing from the Democratic Socialists of America and has emerged as a prominent figure within the progressive cadre of Los Angeles politics. Many socialist organizations supporting her promote reductions in police forces and push for a justice system that does not rely heavily on mass incarceration.

Additionally, the position of Los Angeles County Sheriff is also drawing considerable attention in this election cycle. As of approximately 10 PM on Tuesday, incumbent Sheriff Robert Luna received 70.45% of the votes, while former Sheriff Alex Villanueva garnered 29.55%.

This election not only reflects local concerns but also echoes broader national trends within the Democratic Party, making it a pivotal moment for both candidates and their respective platforms. The outcome of this tightly contested race is eagerly awaited, as voters make critical decisions that could shape the future direction of Los Angeles.
