Shirley Chai Makes History with Victory; Several Republican Officials in South Brooklyn Defeated

Last night, the election results revealed a significant shift in South Brooklyn, where multiple incumbent Republican state legislators failed to secure re-election, with Democratic candidates emerging victorious in a clear demonstration of a “blue wave” sweeping across the region. Notably, however, Republican Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis managed to retain her seat.

In the 49th district of the state assembly, incumbent Republican Assemblyman Yongjia Zheng faced a competitive challenge from Democratic contender Xiaoqiong Xie. As of 10 PM last night, the results indicated that Xie narrowly won with 49.68% of the votes, totaling 7,159, marking her as the first Fuzhou-born individual elected to the New York State Assembly. Zheng received 45.50% of the vote, amounting to 6,556 votes, while there were 646 blank votes, constituting 4.48% of the total.

Xiaoqiong Xie currently serves as a Democratic district leader and immigrated to the United States from Fujian, China, at the age of 18. She began her political journey by engaging in school parent associations and community education committees. Notably, during her tenure in the office of City Council member Justin Brannan, she helped secure approximately $30 million in community funding. Xie expressed that her journey of overcoming language barriers has empowered her to communicate directly with voters in Mandarin and Fuzhou dialect, and she aspires to encourage more immigrants to step outside their comfort zones and actively participate in public affairs.

In the 46th district of the state assembly, incumbent Republican Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny also faced defeat, as Democratic challenger Chris McCreight won decisively with 53.72% of the vote, compared to Brook-Krasny’s 43%. McCreight previously served as chief of staff for former City Council member Justin Brannan for eight years and currently acts as a senior advisor to City Council member Kayla Santosuosso, while also holding the position of leader of the Brooklyn Democratic Party.

Meanwhile, in the 45th district of the state assembly, which encompasses Sheepshead Bay, incumbent Republican Assemblyman Michael Novakhov similarly lost by approximately a 20-point margin to his Democratic opponent, Joey Cohen-Saban.

In a positive note for the Democratic Party, incumbent Senator Sam Sutton successfully maintained his seat in the 22nd district of the state Senate in South Brooklyn, achieving a strong victory with 62% of the votes against his Republican challenger.

On the congressional front, Republican Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis from New York’s 11th district successfully defended her seat, winning with 54.94% of the votes against Democratic challenger Mike DeCillis, who advocated for a progressive agenda.

These results not only showcase a shifting political landscape in South Brooklyn but also reveal the growing influence of Democratic candidates in areas previously dominated by Republicans. The various outcomes demonstrate the importance of voter engagement and the continuous evolution of the electoral dynamics in this vibrant community.

As the dust settles on this election, the implications for future legislative policies and initiatives will be closely monitored, contributing to an ongoing narrative of change within the region’s political framework.
