Elderly Tourists in Jiuzhaigou Suspected of Cutting in Line, Injuring Two Young People (Video)

On November 2, a violent altercation involving tourists erupted at the famous Jiuzhaigou Valley in Sichuan Province, China, after an elderly couple was accused of cutting the queue. The situation escalated when two young tourists intervened, leading to a physical confrontation that resulted in injuries to both young individuals.

Footage of the incident has been widely circulated on Chinese social media, capturing the tense moments at a popular scenic viewing platform by a lake within the park. The area was packed with visitors eager to take photos, all adhering to a designated line for entry. However, an elderly couple reportedly disregarded these rules and attempted to skip ahead, prompting the intervention of two young tourists.

In the viral video, a male tourist in a blue jacket and a baseball cap can be seen violently attacking a young man wearing a purple jacket. With a flurry of punches, the elderly man strikes the younger individual repeatedly across the face, even using his elbow in the assault. Witnesses expressed their shock, exclaiming, “Is this old man out of his mind?”

Another video clip showed a young woman in a white jacket, who was also a victim of the assault, trying to wipe blood from her face with a tissue. The injured male tourist, visibly upset, confronted the elderly assailant, shouting, “Don’t leave! Don’t walk away! You’ve hurt someone badly; you cannot just leave!”

Other bystanders attempted to prevent the elderly man from escaping the scene, while the assaulted young man quickly took out his phone to report the incident to the police.

The Jiuzhaigou Valley scenic area issued a statement on November 3 confirming the altercation involving the elderly tourists.

On the same day, the Jiuzhaigou County Public Security Bureau released a report regarding the incident. They stated that upon receiving the complaint, all involved parties were summoned for investigation. The inquiry revealed that the man, 62, from Shaanxi Province, along with his 58-year-old companion, had a dispute over photography with a 27-year-old man from Beijing and a 26-year-old companion from Guangdong, which escalated into a physical fight. Both the Beijing tourist and his companion, as well as the elderly tourist from Shaanxi, sustained injuries. After medical attention, their conditions were fortunately not life-threatening.

This incident has sparked widespread debate and criticism among Chinese netizens, who have condemned the behavior of the elderly tourist for its lack of civility. Many comments highlighted the absurdity of the situation, with one user remarking, “Bad people grow old, but they remain bad people,” and another sarcastically adding, “They feast on the social services provided by the youth, living comfortably and doing nothing!”

International observers have also weighed in, referring to the elderly assaulter as an “old Red Guard.” There are claims circulating that he may be related to a government official, suggesting that the authorities may be handling the case leniently. Some netizens allege that the resolution simply involved a compensation of 2,000 yuan, although these assertions have not been officially confirmed.

Overall, this incident raises serious questions about social behavior among tourists, especially within such breathtaking natural vistas, and highlights the ongoing tensions between generations in contemporary Chinese society.
