Pentagon Accelerates Deployment of AI Technology, Startups in High Demand

On Monday, August 17th, the CEO of defense technology startup Smack stated that the demand for accelerating the deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) by the Pentagon has driven the company to seek a new round of financing. In addition, amidst the supply chain risk turbulence from Anthropic company, these startups have become highly sought after in the AI industry.

According to Reuters, Smack Technologies is a startup dedicated to developing AI decision-making tools for the military and is currently raising funds to expedite the production of its flagship product, as well as manufacturing wearable AI hardware designed for the battlefield.

The $61 million Series B funding round was initiated following the US Department of Defense categorizing Anthropic as a “supply chain risk” in March. This event has sent shockwaves through the industry, prompting various branches of the military to strive for diversification in AI suppliers, turning companies like Smack from being on the sidelines to becoming coveted entities.

Co-founder and CEO of Smack, Andy Markoff, mentioned that due to the Anthropic incident, the company engaged in discussions with the Marine Corps and Navy during the spring, with both branches urging Smack to expedite its production pace.

This sense of urgency stems from a widespread concern Markoff observed within the Pentagon: future conflicts with evenly matched adversaries will take place in a decentralized and communication-limited environment. In such a setting, forces will not be able to rely on continuously transmitting data back to a central command center as they did in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“Future wars… will be more decentralized than any conflict we’ve experienced,” Markoff stated. He added that most tactical decisions will need to be made directly on the battlefield before the data is transmitted to centralized systems.

Smack’s core technology, Omega, streamlines the firepower planning process of the Marine Corps, determining targets and methods, and making real-time adjustments when ammunition, sensors, or shooting units deviate from the operational plan.

In July, Smack announced securing two prototype development contracts from the Joint Fires Network (JFN) and the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab. Although the exact contract amounts were not disclosed, the company stated that the combined value of the two contracts exceeds seven figures.

The valuation of this Series B funding round was not publicly disclosed. Participating investment firms include Costanoa Ventures, First In, Point72 Ventures, and Geodesic Capital, among others.

The company revealed that Omega utilizes reinforcement learning models and real-time computer vision technology to generate action plans within minutes and to rectify disrupted operational plans in seconds, optimizing the kill chain that is vulnerable to disturbances and slow adaptation in rapidly evolving combat environments. This new funding will accelerate the production of the Omega product and support the development of Alpha, a flexible AI display device worn on the forearm aimed at replacing the whiteboards troops traditionally strapped to their arms during field missions.

The company has a dedicated office in Austin, Texas for this project and plans to produce 10 to 20 prototypes within the next six months.

Smack’s workforce has grown from 19 employees in April to currently 51 individuals, with plans to increase the total number of employees to around 85 by the end of the year.
